Audi reveals new A1 details

Audi will be pegging prices of the A1 close to the Mini, an inside source has revealed writes Autocar.

The upmarket supermini, due to go on sale at the end of 2010, is likely to start at around £13,000 for the base three-door model, although the bulk of the range will retail between £15,000 to £20,000.

The new A1 is set to share a lot of mechanicals with the recently launched VW Polo. Exact details are scarce, but it’s likely to be powered by a range of existing VW group engines and some newly developed motors.

The petrol model range begins with an 86bhp, 1.2-litre petrol engine, with a turbo version offering 104bhp. Further up there will be a naturally aspirated 1.4-litre petrol with 122bhp and a high-performance, turbocharged version of the same unit that puts out 170bhp.

Diesel engines are likely to be a 1.6-litre common-rail injection unit in three states of tune: 75bhp, 90bhp and 105bhp.

Audi sources say that the company is keen to offer A1 buyers a similar ownership experience to that of the Mini. That’s likely to include a wide range of options to personalise your car and the company is planning a all-in service package, designed to give a fixed ownership cost over three or five years.

Porsche Boxster Spyder – New Details

Porsche has released more information on its new range-topping Boxster, the Spyder, ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Los Angeles motor show this week writes Autocar.

The new details confirm that the car is a far cry from the marketing-spun money-maker some feared it would be, but rather a fully redesigned and re-engineered sub-£50k performance special.

The Boxster Spyder will indeed run the same 315bhp 3.4-litre engine as the Cayman S. It’s a significantly different motor to the 305bhp unit in a Boxster S, however: it revs all the way to 7500rpm, and features a different crankcase, different engine mounts, a different oil pump, different intake manifolds and a more sophisticated direct fuel injection system.

Audi tracks down the last Horch – in Texas

We have August Horch to thank for Audi. A former engineer for Karl Benz, Horch started the second oldest company of the original four companies that merged to form Auto Union (the first was Wanderer). But it was Horch whose name, translated into Latin, became “Audi.”

The last Horch was built in Ingolstadt in 1953, and Audi wanted to find it. They put their vintage car locator, Ralph Hornung, on the case and he ended up in a field in West Texas.

What is it?

A special-edition 911 limited to 250 examples.

it’s called “Sport” because it runs an uprated version of the 3.8-litre direct-injection Carrera S engine (with an additional 22bhp), and a standard sport chassis. It gets “Classic” because it incorporates styling cues taken from Porsche’s back catalogue – most relevant of all, the fixed position ducktail spoiler, not seen since the 2.7 RS.

Also making a comeback are Fuchs-style alloys and black surrounds for the headlights, a detail from the 1974 Turbo RSR.

Other distinguishing features are: the use of the wider body from the Carrera 4 without all-wheel drive, a double-bubble roof, and a mandatory Classic Grey colour.

What’s it like?

Surprisingly comfortable. If you’re expecting a stripped-out semi-GT car, then that is not what the Sport Classic is about. Instead the interior draws heavily on Porsche’s Exclusive department, so much of the cabin is finished in the Expresso Nature (dark brown) leather, including the air vents and door handles.

Volkswagen confirms Karmann purchase, plans new car at factory in 2011

Volkswagen AG has announced it will be establishing a new manufacturing unit in Osnabrueck, located in VW’s home state of Lower Saxony, Germany. Interestingly enough, VW will be purchasing the land, equipment, and machinery formerly owned by Karmann — the coachbuilder and convertible roof specialists who manufactured the classic Beetle-based Karmann Ghia coupe (Karmann filed for bankruptcy protection in April, and has been struggling since.)

Production of a new vehicle at the plant is slated to start in 2011. In the meantime, 200 people will be needed to open the plant next year, and VW is estimating more than 1,000 new jobs will be created by 2014. Volkswagen AG has not disclosed which model will be built at the plant, or any financial details.

VW Golf on the double

Volkswagen welcomes a new addition to the Golf family for 2010, the Golf Wagon that replaces the Jetta Wagon in the lineup writes www.metronews.ca.

VW offers exclusive package for New Beetle

Volkswagen is bringing out a sporty edition of the New Beetle including an exclusive paint job and other features such as 17-inch alloys and three-spoke leather steering wheel.

The exterior can be ordered in ‘Black Orange,’ ‘Red Rock’ (orange) or in black livery with thick stripes on the lower door sills emphasizing the sporty nature. The stripe design is continued in the interior with orange stripes on the sports seats. The textile floor mats and the gear knob are likewise in orange while the pedals are in aluminium.

Standard items include air conditioning, a radio with CD, a central armrest and electric windows. The ‘BlackOrange’ model is available either in the sedan or convertible version with prices starting at 22,550 euros (33,742 dollars) for the 75 kW/102 hp model.

VW Gets “Safest Car” Rating But Can’t Sell Autos In US

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety came out with its annual list of safest cars. Ford (NYSE:F) and its Volvo unit got six awards, VW and Subaru each got five writes 24/7 Wall Street.

Chrysler had four cars on the list and Honda (NYSE:HMC) and GM each had two

Toyota  (NYSE:TM), BMW, Mazda Motor and Mitsubishi ended up with nothing.

The extraordinary thing about the list is that VW has less than 1% of the US car market. All of the other winners have major domestic market share led by GM, Toyota, and Ford.

VW had a chance to be a dominant small car company in the US when its popular Beetle was a best seller in the early 1970s. It did not follow that success up with more models and Japanese companies took the market role of low-cost, high-quality vehicle providers. VW/Porsche is now the largest car company in the world ahead of Toyota and GM.

VW had a chance to become a real force in the American market again. It could have made an aggressive bid for Chrysler and instantly had an 8% share of domestic auto sales. It let Fiat take that prize, which was a risky gamble. Chrysler may not make it because of sharply falling sales.

No guts, no glory, no US market share for VW.

Quattro Shock: Forthcoming Audi A1 lineup reportedly to arrive without ‘Quattro’

Audi and Quattro go together like peanut butter and jelly, but Autobild is reporting that the four-ringed automaker’s fabulous all-wheel drive system will be excluded from the forthcoming A1 mini car writes Autoblog. We’re a little surprised to hear that the Quattro tech won’t be added considering that the A1’s design study, the Audi Metroproject Quattro Concept, includes the word “Quattro” in its name. Regardless, while this news might be a problem for purists, on the practical side, the inclusion of AWD means additional weight and cost, something that’s antithetical to the A1’s stated mission.

The A1 will reportedly only be available with one gearbox: a seven speed S-Tronic automatic transmission. Autobild reports that the A1 will be available throughout Europe in August or September of next year, with a sportback version coming online in late 2011 and a cabriolet in early 2012. The S1 will reportedly hit production in February of 2011 with a 1.4-liter TFSI powerplant capable of a very respectable 180 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds. There’s no word on whether Audi plans to offer the A1 in the U.S., but we should know more when the compact runabout is revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
