So what involved to get this lot to bolt together...or is it just bolting the standard IRS shafts to the 944 hubs??
ADEY T25

944 driveshaft with a beetle joint on one end the rest is a nut and bolt job

Is there an increase? I'm using 944 driveshafts on my Baja, and they are definitely the same length as T1 driveshafts. Maybe it varies depending on the ages/model of the 944?
Cleverchap
20-10-2004, 11:22 AM
I thought Alloy A-Arms increase rear track, thats what I've been told......thats why steel 944 arms are getting rare as they are a direct replacment.
If its nowt to do with the drive shafts then it must be something to do with the hub, i guess. Sorry for crashing your thread Adey but we need to know!!:D
ADEY T25
20-10-2004, 12:50 PM
Alloy arms are 70mm wider so the driveshafts are longer. Non turbo driveshafts are the same length as T1.
S2,Turbo and 968 are longer

sounds like you're doing a top job:cool:

I wouldnt have thought so if you go semi spaceframe, as long as all the vital parts are fastened to steel.

Don't know if this will be of interest to you buggy builders but I am breaking Porsche 924/924 Turbo models which have the steel swing axle IRS arm setups and antiroll bars.
Loads of other VW/Porsche use parts available like the master cylinder, front struts etc too.
Isn't that a Porsche A/R bar on the rear of yours Adey?

Ade...what size edging did you use on the tub lip and did you use normal beetle wing piping ?
ADEY T25
15-01-2005, 08:24 PM
No, the wing edging is clip on U shaped stuff and the pipiong round the bonnet is bigger than beetle stuff. As for your tank dilemma i'd go for a cut and shut beetle tank i recon if you shave a bit off each side you'll get one in

negative pitch
17-01-2005, 07:31 PM
great idea for the pump switch, I was trying to think of a way myself, coz as soon as you turn on the main kill switch the pump starts. theres a second kill switch which controls the electrics, but it wont work till the main one is on, and the pump is connected to the first, if you follow that :D which would be a pain if I want to just sit there with the only the ice system on (which I still have to figure out :D )

Seconded, those are some nice mounts. :)
Is the engine braced to the rear cage? I'm just wondering if you will get any unwanted vibration between the cage and the exhaust. i.e. Should the exhaust be 'soft' mounted to the cage.

Now i've greased the beam up (its been sat for a while) and driven it the suspension has sunk so we've had to raise the front end a little bit. Gonna try for a MOT tomorrow if i get time then all it needs is a couple of little jobs and the rear seat making.

Sorry missed this one, i don't think its gonna make alot of difference the engine and gearbox are solid mounted so its going to catch all the vibes anyway, we'll see ;)

Right then, I took it for MOT today the guy who did it was super strict which as it is its first MOT in its new guise isnt a bad thing.
It failed on Headlamp aim, washer jet inop (it was 10 mins before the test) front numberplate  and the wheels rubbing on full lock.
so i'll be back there tomorrow all problems fixed ready for a ticket :)

Now its got a few miles on its time for some mods
First after setting the tracking on giving it some pos camber it understeered if it was pushed so today i've removed the anti roll bar off the front problem solved.
Second the supertrapps look the part but i think they could be strangling the engine so on friday its getting a pair of custom made race cans made for it.
So at Stanford on Sunday they should be on ;)

TRAUMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fetched the buggy back yesterday sporting a pair of sexyass ART Cans and every so often it developed oil smoke. So i decided it was due to the CSP blanking off the breather on the crankcase so i fitted a breather pipe and filter to the oil filler pipe to see if that sorted it, WRONG it blew all the oil out  So i've ended up drilling the case where the breather box should be and fitting a pipe and filter there, so far so good so its fingers crossed for the morning. After todays run (being its first of any real distance) i nursed it to stanford a steady 60mph all the way and temp at about 102 degrees, on the way back it was running at 120 degrees so not bad at all. We got within 5 or 6 miles from home and nailed it 100mph and never missed a beat :) all that happened is some oil got pushed out so my breather works but i don't think its quite big enough, so i've got to tap it out a bit more and it should be fine.

How did i manage to miss this thread.
Your buggy looks the tits.
I do have just a few questions.
Did you have any problems with logbook, now chasis is modified?
What size are your front wheels? dont supose they are 17x7 55et
what spacer did you use.
great buggy

Thats cool about the log book.
ive built mine and just got it changed to convertable, will have to see if they dont like the mods in the future.
25mm spacers.... i run 10mm and the inside of the rim still catches the shoulder of the bottom trailing arm where it comes out of the beam. i have to stop it off on the stops.
maybe ill try bigger spacers. 25mm ones are so expensive though.

Incredible build up mate, like many others it has me inspired to get cracking on mine.
My body is going to be cast from moulds that have been sitting in a relatives shed, unused, for nearly 30 years! No idea what make the moulds are, looks Manx-ish, and theres even a mould to make a removable fibreglass roof... can't wait to get some pics together to share with the buggophiles!

Update.
The car handles like a dream, and stops on a penny. The Type 4 engines drives lovely and is effortless, but i want to go faster so the engine i've built to put in my 356 is now going in the Buggy and the 356 is getting something else ;)
New Engine spec
AS41 Case linebored and full flowed
Bottom end dynamically balanced and match weighted
Straight cut Timing gears Scat cam
1641 Barrels and pistons
New heads with a mild porting and heavy duty springs
Twin DCN's
Baja Twin quiet pack exhaust
Type 4 cooler in modded doghouse
and a formula Vee stupid light flywheel
