    Hi Graham,

Happy New Year to you too. :)

I sold my 1600i Beetle last March as there was too much rust on it (but I have kept my own diagnostic tools just in case). I mainly drive my Reliant Rialto 2 estate (or my 1988 Reliant Rialto SE hatch) nowadays as they are a lot cheaper to run. I have decided to keep my 1300 Beetle and my camper.

I've just replied to a thread on VZi (is her name Sue ?) about idling problems with her 1600i Beetle and have suggested that the vacuum pipe(s) may need to be replaced.

Anyway, I hope you are well. :)

    Hi Phil,
    Happy New Year!
Graham Cooke from Upton upon Severn here..You fixed my dead 1600i a few years ago.
A friend, Howard Cheese (Mexican/Brazilian VW Register) has asked me to contact you. One of his members has an idling 'surge' issue with her 1600i Beetle, she lives in Leamington Spa, is this something that you may be able to help with?
    Thanks,
    Best regards

    Hi Phade,

I know you get inundated with messages from Mexibug people, so I hope you don't mind me adding to the list!

I have a 1998 Mexibug and it's suffering from a flat spot from low revs + occasional (and randomly) it will start wildly idling as if someone is jabbing the accelerator. It will eventually clear itself and return to normal idle.

I have changed the rotor arm, cap and HT leads and I have also cleaned out all the breather pipes and replaced the idle control unit - but nothing has changed.

Do you know anyone based in or near London that has the correct diagnostic software for these Beetles? I have tried Terrys and Henleys and neither have the right experience or equipment to get to the bottom of these problems.

I am totally out of ideas and my beloved bug is no longer fun to drive. (It recently started to spaz out while I was parking at a funeral - totally inappropriate!)

Thanks in advance for any pointers you can provide.

    Best

mexican 1997 convertable beetle, full electric roof. Your name has come up as being an expert with electrical problems on mexican beetles. I hope you can help, something is consistantly running the battery flat over 3-4 day period. Tested battery, alternator, relays, renewed solanoid ,replaced 2 corroded contacts, disconnected radio and alarm system but still no change.

yes and the t piece is fine and the connections on the balancing hoses are fine. i sorted one problem some how i fitted the dizzy 180 out when pulley notch was at 0 the rotor arm was pointing at 3 sorted that now but its still not running right. when i timed her up to 5 adtc she ran fine when i plug the idle box back in the timing moves between 5 adtc and 4 bdtc and at 3000 rpm its 8 bdtc. Thanks for replying :)

The main questions I have are the following:-

    - Did you install the correct DVDA distributor (let me know of the VW part number of that distributor if possible) ?

    - Have you connected the vacuum hoses and pipes correctly ?

    - Is the rubber T-piece on the front N/S of the engine bay split and/or leaking ?

    - Are the front large carburetter "balancing" hoses split and/or perished ? These are the hoses that connect the metal pipe at the front end of the engine bay, which link the two carburetters together.

    Hi Iain,

The jerking when pulling away will be fractured/broken vacuum hoses, which are the following:-

    - from the inlet manifold centre section to the fuel pressure regulator (front N/S of the engine bay)

    - from the inlet manifold centre section to the ECU underneath the rear bench seat.

The best thing to do is to replace both of them and the short lengths of vacuum hose (3.2mm will be a close fit and it's available from your local motor factor). The vacuum pipe part number (in 5 metre lengths) is N 020 139 1 and is available from your local VW dealer.

The cutting out problem will be relay 30 (the ECU voltage regulator relay), which costs about £10 to replace and is also available from your local VW dealer. After the relay has been replaced, you will need to do the following:-

    - check the ignition timing. It should be 6˚ BTDC. If it is not then you will need to set the ignition timing with a VAG 1551/1552, VAS 5051/5052/5053 or a laptop running the VagCom software. You will also need a 1600i to OBD II adaptor http://www.1600i.de/1600i-elektronik/diagnosestecker/OBDIItoVAG1551-7Adaptor.htm . Further information about how to set the ignition timing is on here http://www.1600i.de/1600i-elektronik/ignition-easy/ignition-easy.html .

    - erase the fault code memory (01 - Engine Electronics, 05 - Erase Fault Code Memory)

If you car still ends up cutting out after you have done the above, then it could be down to a corroded hall sender connector. The easiest way to fix that is to clean up the contacts with a fibreglass pen, spray them with PlusGas, connect/disconnect the hall sender several times and wipe off the excess PlusGas.

That's all I can quickly think of at the moment, but it's difficult to tell without looking at it. The main problem I have at the moment is lack of time :( (I'm busy fixing my Reliant Rialto 2 at the moment and hope to get that back on the road very soon), but if you're not too far away, I may be able to have a look at it.

    Cheers,

    Phil

    Hello Phade.
    Hope you're feeling better.
I'm new on this forum and you kinda popped up first about wiring on a Mexican 1600i.
I purchased a very used 1997 Mexican beetle which I'm restoring. Not sure how **** owners this car has had but it seems everyone did a little "work" on her. I keep finding little things that are not supposed to be that way...broken or missing etc etc.
Right now, I'm getting her ready for a safety inpsection and my back-up (reverse) lights do not work. the bulbs are fine. Fuse #12 blows everytime I turn the ignition on. According to the owners manual, this fuse covers the backup lights...but it also handles the dashboard light, the fuel gauge and indicators...which all work...even without the fuse!! I was under the car yesterday and found the braided ground wire broken...I re-attached it. I also found a loose wire to what looks like some kind of sensor at the front of the gearbox. Any ideas?
    Thx.
    Chris.

I've been suffering from very bad hayfever and took a combinbation of anti-histamine anti-congestion capsules (after my fiancée was nagging about me sniffing all night). What a mistake !!

I ended up being awake coz my stomach was doing wierd things, so I stayed up for about 50 minutes then went back to sleep again. Having said that I feel ok now :)

I also have the fun and joy of paperwork, waiting for money to come in and just struggling without a lot of work going on at the moment. It's the main reason why I got my Reliant Rialto as an everyday car (cheap to buy and cheap to run).
