    Hello Laurie,
Im sorry to contact you but hope you can help me. You may remember you re-built an engine on my behalf for Ian Mcgilvery in late 2011/early 2012. Unfortunately it has taken me two and half years and a lot of money to get my van back and it was still in an undriveable condition when it arrived. However during further investigation we have discovered that the engine number has changed and that the engine is now a 1.3 whereas a 1.6 was supplied initially. Obviously Im trying to get to the bottom of what has happened here so is there any way you can think of whereby my engine(the one you re-built) could've been inadvertently swapped for another or do you still have the paperwork pertaining to the work you did ? This is quite a delicate situation and as I have had to employ someone to carry out further repairs , it is also liable to leave me further out of pocket . I hope you can please help me in some way. Thanks.

Hello Laurie - unfortunately, your reputation is too good, and hence it appears everyone wants your opinion. So I thought I would follow the trend, and see if you know where to get a 1600 twin port, long block, sound engine for my VW Panel Van conversion 1979 Bay? The forum sees to say that you know about these things - is this correct? I notice that your last activity was on the 6-8-11 - so you might not be doing this anymore, if so, sorry to have bothered you. But any tips on who you would recommend would be appreciated. Thanks Chrisy72

Good evening Laurie, I hope you don't mind me contacting you, I appreciate you must get asked hundreds of questions and that you've got better things to be doing than answering them all. That said I'm after your opinion on something.... After a long layup I fired up my bus which has a new 1776 engine, it's done about 300 miles that's all. I was greeted by lots of blue smoke which didn't clear up much, the idle was a little lumpy and it chuffing away out of the breather. I figured that it would just be oil in the bores but decided to do a compression test anyway to check the rings. I got figures of 150 to 160 across the four pots which I guess is what you'd expect from a new build. Being a little inquisitive I poked an endoscope down the spark plug holes. Cylinders / piston crowns on 1 and 3 are all nice and shiney, the crowns on 2 and 4 however are very much sooted up. Plugs on all four pots were sooted too Have you an idea as what would be the cause of this and do I need to be worried? Thank you in anticipation and my apologies again for bothering you. Cheers Ian

Hi Laurie, Sorry to bother you!. I wondered if you could help me with some jet sizes for a pair of 40 DCNF to go on a standard 2.0L type 4 engine with a bob cat exhaust with a muffler on it?.
I am currently running a pair of 34 ICT, set to the sizes you gave out in one of your threads and it runs a treat!!!!. But I picked up this pair and thougth I'd have to give them a go and see what it does for my beach buggy. current jet sizes are

    55 pilots
    145 mains
    F22 emulshions
    210 air correctors

The previous owner said they were jetted for a 2.0L but that doesn't mean it's a good set up!. Your views would be much appreciated, Thanks Rob

    Hi,
Hope you don't mind me messaging, but Doug of Doug Restorations in Angmering West Sussex advised that you might be able to give me some advice, as he says you are a wizard with carbs (and most things aircooled).

I would like to know what size jets you would recommend in my Twin Weber 36IDF carbs. I currently have a 130 main but my beach buggy isn't running particularly well once she gets upto about 2500/3000rpm

I’m running a 1,641cc engine (Engine Number: AS61xxxx) with the following spec:
    Mahle 87mm B + P
    German 69mm crank balanced with 311 B rods + 12V 200mm Flywheel
Engle V26 cam - 297 duration 0.335” lift at cam
    Manton steel pushrods
    Magnum Straight cut gears
    Scat 1:4:1 rockers
Type 3 F.I. 040 cylinder heads, stainless valves, heavily ported with matching manifolds
New valve guides cut down to suit cam and profiled at the ends
    Berg Heavy Duty Valve Springs
Bug Pack hardened collets + steel caps
Twin 36 IDF Webers 32mm Venturis Berg linkage
    Facet electric fuel pump
SSP Weber style Fuel pump pressure regulator
Bosch 009 distributor with Petronix Ignitor kit
    Bosch Blue Coil

    Hope this helps.
    Look forward to your response.

    Regards,
    Mark.

    Hi Laurie,

Thanks for getting back to me about the bearings. If you have an .25mm early rear main i would be gratefull if you could sell me it. need to get bug back on the road. Just let me know how much for bearing and p&p and i will send you a cheque. Could you also tell me the torque settings for the conrod nuts and the flywheel bolts as i dont have that info.

    Thanks again keith

I don't use the shouldered bearings any more. I'm using a 3 piece set up that solves end float problems. I may have a .25mm early rear main and the rest are just type 1.

hi laurie, wonde if you can help me locate wasserboxer bearings for my engine. it was built by yourself about ten years ago and until the oil pump failed to do its job properly it was running great. The engine you built was a type 1 as 41 case with a 1982 1915cc crank fitted i think it was a df engine code . i am having difficulty in sourcing the main bearings and hoped you would be able to help.

    Thankles in advance
