H20 The watercooled scene is growing quickly in the UK - talk with other owners here. No 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads too (please use the 'Dude! no pictures i'm afraid, battery was dead yesterday and i dropped the camera today so it wont take pictures anymore
but!

driveshafts fitted
all engine/gearbox/mount bolts tightened
99% wiring done
cooling system fully plumbed in
fuel pump wired up and working

off to the scrappy tomorrow to try and hunt down a few final bits and pieces, and hopefully my silicone hose will arrive so i might be able to fit the carbs, starter motor and exhaust tomorrow, which means if i turn the key, something should happen

need to work out the wiring for the alternator though as it's a bit different to the one i took out, might just put the original alternator in to make things easier

When it's running are the idle rev normal, or is it idling high??
Have you got a exhaust gas analyser to check your mix?
Then there's the balance on the carbs, if that's off it'll cause irratic running...

Don't give up dude, when you suss the prob you'll probably kick yourself!!

i think it's probably running way too rich at the moment, when you can get it running it'll idle fine, if not a bit fast, for about 20-30 seconds then slowly die out so i think it's getting flooded, trouble is i cant sort out the timing properly until it idles carb balance seems to be ok, it idles quite smoothly when you get it going, it takes a hell of a lot to get it going though

hoping to get it to the club meet tonight, wish me luck!

Few q's if you dont mind! I have just bought a polo fox coupe, low miles, 2 owners from new and pretty tidy bodywork. In the longrun she's going to be lowered, deep dish rims and big engine........

......Whats the 16v engine out of that you're fitting?
what box are you using?

Cheers dude

engine is from a 16v polo 6n (mark 4 basicaly) from the late 90's, engine code is AFH
the box is an 8P code box, but i'm not sure what polo it's from
you can also use a box from a mk3 polo GT but the ratios are a bit short, good for spinning the wheels up to 4th gear, not so good for long journeys! G40 boxes are also an option, but rarely come up for sale

anymore questions fire away!

wow, completely forgot about this thread!

since the last post (2 years ago!? where the f*ck has the time gone!!??) the problems i had with the engine cutting out? i had the fuel lines plumbed into the breather pipes on the carbs

managed about 400 miles in the last 2 years, had no end of problems with the bike carbs (went through 3 manifolds in total, turns out you CAN'T modify the original to work well enough ) but my god, on the few occasions when it ran nicely, it's a damn good job the seats were brown to start with! it FLIES!!

and a few months ago, the head ate itself, exhaust cam good for scrap, cam guide chewed to bits, so there was only 1 thing to do........... make it even quicker!!!!!

took the engine out, stripped it to bits, sold the bike carbs (carbs from hell, good luck to the new owner ) and decided now would be a good time to stroke it out to a 1.6l, crank, flywheel, con-rods and pistons have all been sent off for balancing, bike carbs are being replaced with a set of trusty dellortos, full stainless exhaust to go on it and a bit of porting/polishing and gas flowing to be done on the head. Throw in a set of re-profiled cams and it should be good for at least 160bhp i should imagine. Doesn't sound a lot, but the car weighs all of about 700kg will get some pics up of the engine when it was in and running, there's some videos lurking somewhere too, i'll see if i can find them........
