Default Too rusty? Hot Rod Bay

I'm currently working 12hr days on a shutdown at work, and because of this I can't do anything on my resto, , so I've decided to start posting the pics on here to try and help keep my chin up and my motivation higher

Some will have seen these pics before, many will not, I'm gonna post them in a dated diary stylee until I get to the present. These will be every few days in a count down to when I get off the 12hrs and can back to it.

Well I'm in the very beginnings on this project, here's the story so far.

I had started to restore a tin top microbus using a converted panel van for parts, both are '71s. But I bought a '73 Westy as a daily and I sort of lost the motivation in the resto. I'd always had a hankering for a Hot Rod Bay and it would have been the project straight after the microbus.

Anyways fast forward a few months and after seeing several Volks Rods I decided that I should do it, so the attention was turned to the panel van I already had, albeit converted into a camper.

The microbus is donating it's roof, rear quarters, and front panel, well most of it.

So here are the 2 buses...

...that are going to look something like this.

And to see how far I'd got on the resto have a look here http://www.justkampers.co.uk/interac...5&pagenumber=1

looks mint mate, and forget what all them lot on JK are saying about time/effort/$! thats got fuck all to do with it, my one tip is to make sure you seam seal everything anywhere that VW did it and more cos that why they rot out!
Good luck with it, dont give up!
As far as it being jiged etc, they wernt that straight to start with, and as long as your new chassis sections line up both ends and is roughtly straight weld away, weld away my friend!!!
cheers
alex.

ps i would have proberbly started with sandblasting the whole thing, ah well!

inspirational!!!!!!!!! they need to do a smily kissing someones feet just so everyone can send it to you!!!!
you have given me renewed vigor to get on quicker with my bus!!!!!!
and after reading your thread on jk all i can say is most of those trying to put you off were either owners of modern vws who are jealous cos their buses will NEVER be as cool as a split or bay! or people who havent got the ability or motivation to get out in the cold and get on bringing a bus back to life!!!!
and (sorry!) how many people do you see smiling and waving at "an old british classic like a jaguar" not one cos people who drive those big old barges tend to be pompous people with too much bloody money!!!!!!
sorry bout the great big novel ive written here but your thread and its content got my fires burning!
keep us on vzi posted
big respect !!!!!!!!!!

The orange has now been scrapped, if I had sandblasted it, it would have had no chassis left, at all

Making slow progress, but getting the roof done...

...you can just make out the donor bus and my Westy in the background. A days spot weld drilling got me to this...

...much weld line straightening and welding up holes where I'd either got too rough with it, or the grinder slipped. Only one weld repair required because of rust, and one to fill in a hole where a vent had been...

...and as of yesterday all I've to do is rub down the filler that's covering a few areas that had been pitted from rust, the areas having been 'clean and stripped' and then an application of Kurust.

My thoughts exactly... Some of the comments on JK were just plain anoying which is why I didn't post any replies as I'd go off on one...lol
MOLER... RESPECT MATEY... YOU GO FOR IT.
My Bay was BAD but not quite as bad as yours ..lol... Just wait till it's back together and you can say " I DID THAT" that should shut any negagtive non believers up....

Keep posting pictures mate.... Cracking job....

In answer to some JK questions....We do this type of work because WE CAN

Bit of progress for y`all :-)

Decided to bare metal the outside edge as the paint was terrible...

...bit of black, well, one full tin :-)

Got the old roof off...

...couldn't believe that the dash wasn't rotten, unlike the top edge of the front panel, inner and outer...

...and have shown the front panel the shape end of a grinder.
