Sand rail project
Picked this up a few weeks back, just stripped it down to make sure it's solid and straight (which it is ).
Anyhow, front beam was shagged which has been removed and a replacement has already been delivered. Engine is suspect, but have a spare so not a biggy.
Here's the rail
I'm going the porsche wheel route, these should be here early next week, 17" 6.5" and 8" widths;
Although I have toyed with the idea of extreme wheels, got these turning up next week as well, possibly (£3.5K worth of rims - long story), 22"  and front and back 10" width  ;
Anyway, my first ride post and first Sand rail, any advice or encouragement appreciated.

no.worries, yes it has a log book, 1972 VW, thankfully the V5 just states
VW Volkswagen 1972, so should be easier to register.
Dr lewis, must admit, I'm erring towards the 22"'s, it may look completely stupid and it may look differently cool, time will tell.
Just took delivery of a double rear wing, I know it won't need it - pure aesthetics . Also picked up 2 ex military racal dana 2.4 meter whip aerials ,
Currently cleaning the front end to prime and paint to get the new front end on and cleaning the front discs to see if they are useable.
Frame is going to be satin black with as much polished alloy to contrast.
Thanks for the input guys

Porsche wheels arrived, used porsch-apart on ebay, suberb service, ordered Friday morning, arrived today at work, well packed and all mint condition. All wheels are 17" with 6.5" to the front and 8" at the rear. Will grab some rubber when I see a bargain come up on ebay as there is no hurry. Already have the adapters so just need to clean the hubs/discs.
Also the suppliers of the 22" wheels have just advised they can supply them in 5/120, 5/130 or 5/112 which will save a small fortune in adapters as I already have 5/130. Common sense says the 17" porsche rims will look the part, but the idiot inside me says put the 22 inchers on
Cleaned the front end with grinder and wire wheel, I'm glad the previous owner (or possibly the guy before) painted the frame but it is a shit job. Looking to etch this week and lay down some Por15 or the Rust paint thingy from Retro dubs be the weekend and get the new beam on. will get pics on as soon as I can.

Id stick with 17's, but id rather get some staggered rims with a deep dish on the back. Satin black with polished ally parts sounds good, roof chop would add to the street look too. Id imagine its easy as anything on a tube frame buggy and would look killer, ive always thought the roof on these short buggies looked too tall.

Hi McQueen, the rail frame is a Berrien unit and I suspect they did a fair bit of developement in the structual integrity of the frame, I'm not confident in chopping it up yet (maybe later). If I do use the 17"s they will be down for a polish - never quite got the concept of using alloy for a material for wheels and then painting them "metal" colour???
I have already asked the WillPower people to drill the 22"s to 5/130 PCD so I will have the choice come delivery day. main issue I have with the 22"s is the need for bigger calipers and the more expensive rubber!
