This is one that I´ve known about for some years, but this blog has the first decent pics I´ve ever seen of it. Built in 1953 and abandoned in 1993 after ice brought the cables down one night, this is right on the border of Italy and Switzerland, at the very foot of the Matterhorn. Now only accessible on foot, by ice climbing on to a 3500m ridge, its looking pretty rickety as ice and wind tear it to bits slowly. I asked about the possibility of getting up to it in Zermatt once. The guy told me that if I trekked across the glacier underneath the cable car pylons that there probably wouldn´t be "too many" crevasses! I let that sink in for a bit - decided that one crevasse = too many and thought better of it at that point.

Respect to the guys who took the pics and spent what must have been a highly unpleasant night up there. Pity that the blog is in German. It´s actually a geocaching blog. Fuck that!

That is brilliant!!! I would so like to do something like that. It's a long time since I was round that area.
I particularly like the footprints on this one. Can you imagine sticking your head round the corner thinking "there's been nobody here for years" and seeing those.... :D:D

He says that they were astonished to hear footsteps in the building in the morning, and then met two Swiss climbers who had stomped up there from Zermatt for a late breakfast! Without ice crampons!!!

I´d love to do it too, but probably not without a guide.

You´re on! I´ve trekked up the Oberrothorn, just across the valley, though I have to admit, the altitude really takes it out of me, being a sea level sort of person.
Wanna take a shot at the Matterhorn too, while we´re in the neighbourhood, like?
