Paris Beetle Ragtop Install on a 1970 Beetle Part 11 Tech Videos Paris Beetle Ragtop Install on a 1970 Beetle Part 11

Poppers all done and the ragtop now fitted. I did not do a video for th e locking nuts fro the inside but a tip is to shut it completely and mark where the front bar sits in the rail. Do the same with it open. Then remove the front front bar and hold it up on the inside to the marks on the rails. This will enable you to make accurate holes for the locking screws. Thats it job done.

Pop rivets done at the front and make sure it even at both sides to the gutters. Do them one at a time don't be tempted to pre drill them all in one go. Take your time here or the roof will not look like its sitting right. I ended up doing the complete front row so I knew it was straight and correctly distanced from the gutters. Pull the rear corners back at make sure its even again from the gutters, again a spare pair of hands would be useful here. With the back square and even put the rear poppers in and then infill the others

Vinyl roof Bars will need to be trimmed to fit the frame. I put one end in one side and then marked to the edge on the other. These then get trimmed down and the plastic ends drilled and pop riveted on. Remember the bar with the locking screw goes at the front.

Paris Beetle Ragtop Install on a 1970 Beetle Part 8 Tech Videos Paris Beetle Ragtop Install on a 1970 Beetle Part 8

The headlining has been trimmed back at the sides and a strip of double sided tape put down to hold the headlining down. The side bars fit over this and get riveted down. If you got your measurements right the side bars should fit snuggly into the hole. Use the holes in the side rails to drill through and put the pop rivets in. Repeat for the other side. The front and rear bars are solid ali and well need clamping down, dont worry they do flex enough. Clamp them down and mark where they will need to be trimmed. I put 2 pop rivets in each end and one about 7cm away from these 2 and then evenly spaced out a few more between these. The reason fro this is that the bar is originally straight and will be contouring to the roof. The same...

Well big hole now, no going back. Also trimmed the headlining so it is easier to work around. I would say at this stage it is quite handy to have a spare pair of hands to support the roof section to be removed and also to hold the headlining out of the way in case of sparks from the angle grinder. I forgot to say in the last sction that I removed 2 sections of sound deadning material. At this point as well I cut the 4th headling bar. Remember to use something strong like an angle grinder because they are tough buggers.
