First Official Pictures of the Volkswagen Amarok

The first pictures and several key details of the midsize Volkswagen Amarok have hit the interwebs ahead of its Dec. 15 world debut writes

Unlike the Volkswagen Pickup Concept shown last year, which featured an integrated body like the Honda Ridgeline, the production version of the Amarok follows a conventional body-on-frame layout with the cargo box separate from the passenger cabin. The Amarok’s spartan interior styling stays close to the concept’s simple cockpit.


The Amarok will initially be available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder common rail injection diesel engine rated at 163 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque. That oil burner will be followed later by a second diesel rated at 122 hp and 250 pounds-feet of torque. A 21-gallon fuel tank is expected to provide more than 600 miles of driving range. A direct-injection gasoline engine will also be offered.


Depending on configuration and powertrain, the Amarok will be able to haul up to 2,300 pounds (1.15 tons) and tow up to 5,600 pounds (2.8 tons). The only passenger configurations that will be offered will be a four-door double cab and a two-door regular cab. There are no plans for an extended cab version.

Three trim packages will be available: Basic, Trendline and Highline. The entry-level Basic trim features manually operated windows, door locks and mirrors. The middle-of-the-road Trendline adds a painted front bumper and mirror skull caps that match the body color, plus electric door locks and mirrors. It will also include a radio and CD player, air conditioning and fog lamps. Both the Basic and Trendline Amaroks will roll on 16-inch wheels. The upscale Highline includes chromed mirrors, painted wheel arches, higher quality interior components and 17-inch aluminum wheels.


Volkswagen hopes to sell up to 100,000 trucks annually in the competitive global market for small pickups. The Amarok will be produced at a VW plant in Pacheco, Argentina and sold in South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. There are no plans to sell it in the U.S.

Three driveline choices will be available: Full time all-wheel drive, part time all-wheel drive and rear wheel drive only. In the all-wheel drive version, a Torsen differential will distribute torque at a 40-to-60 ratio to the front and rear axles. Hill hold assist, hill descent control and a rear differential lock will be optional features.

VW Polo is European Car of the Year 2010

New Volkswagen supermini Polo scoops European Car of the Year 2010 for new cars in Europe.


Volkswagen’s Polo has won the 2010 Car of the Year award, garnering votes from each of the 59 European judges and the most maximum marks writes the Telegraph.

The vote was close, though, with the Polo scoring 347 points against 337 for the innovative Toyota iQ urban car, which came second in the annual award.

Third place went to the new version of Vauxhall’s Astra hatchback and fourth to the Skoda Yeti, with the Mercedes-Benz E-class, Peugeot 3008 and Citroën C3 Picasso respectively completing the seven shortlisted cars.

Although the Polo has been placed in the top three in the Coty award’s 45-year history, this is the first time it has won. Volkswagen has been shortlisted 11 times for its cars but only the Golf has won the accoldae, in 1992.

It is also the first time that Coty judge and Telegraph Motoring correspondent Andrew English has picked a winner.

“I am delighted,” he said. “The Polo is a worthy winner whose time seems about right.”

2011 Audi A8 First Look

Audi’s Electrified Wellness Lounge


We haven’t the slightest clue what a “wellness lounge” might be, but it sure sounds like a better place to spend time than in the “pestilence antechamber.”

The interior of the upsized 2011 Audi A8 is described by company literature as a wellness lounge for the senses and we cannot disagree for the reason stated above. In any case, it sure does look nice writes

This is an area in which Audi has long embarrassed the more successful full-size luxury sedans offered by its competition. For at least the last two generations, the Audi A8 has had an effortlessly elegant interior in place of the Very-Serious-Command-and-Control-Center/Button-rific approach of its rivals.

How much Mercedes-Benz and BMW are sweating the arrival of the new Audi is another matter. Presently the A8 entices a measly 6 percent of people who buy cars in this class in the U.S. And with sales of high-end luxury items going down the gold-plated toilet, the world isn’t getting easier on the premium Audi.

Now being introduced for Europe and scheduled for release in the United States next fall as the 2011 Audi A8, the new car maintains the model’s customary strengths — as in the aforementioned elegant interior and standard all-wheel drive — and then brings a little more size, a host of new electronic doodads and more LEDs than, well, something that has a whole freakin’ lot of LEDs.

Breaking news: New Audi A2 plans confirmed

Audi is currently planning a new A2, company boss Rupert Stadler has told Autocar.

“As we gave the A1 that nomenclature there’s clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3,” he admitted.

Stadler wouldn’t be drawn on what exactly a new A2 could be, but admitted that it would be an obvious propostion.

“If you don’t have to explain a car like the A2 then it works,” he said.

However other insiders have admitted that the A2 is likely to be an ‘E2’: an electric car based on the the A1 but with a unique bodystyle and look.

Stadler also quashed rumours that Audi was planning a car based on the VW Up!, possibly badged A0, saying that there was no possibility of the company slotting in a car under the forthcoming A1 supermini, which will be launched at the Geneva motor show in March.
