VW Bus Cake? Or is it a Campervan?

Posted by volkszone

CAKE1

A surprise cake for the birthday girl. Initially this cake caused some problems but only because we pride ourselves on being perfectionist writes vw-dv.blogspot.com. We remade it as the dimensions weren’t right. The cake itself is a zesty lemon and covered with a mixture of fondant and florist paste. The girl is made from Fimo and is made to be kept.

The Volksworld Show 2010

VOLKSWORLD SHOW

Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey

March 27th & 28th 2010

Words and pics by Chris ‘Funkmaster Red’ Redford.

MAIN

The annual convergence on Sandown Park in Surrey by many thousands of VW fans marks the true start of the show season. Now in its 16th year, it is no surprise that it is so well attended as the show attracts some of the very best show cars from all over Europe and sometimes even further afield.

SDC11583 SDC11551

This year was no exception and over the weekend of the 27th-28th of March, the venue once again filled to capacity with some very delectable German metal and many eager punters who came to look and drool.

PLEASE CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS TO VIEW LARGER PICS.

The show has it all, from show cars that are examples of perfection to club stands, traders, a swapmeet and various displays, activities and demonstrations taking place throughout the weekend. There really is so much to take in that you can spend the whole weekend there and still not have seen it all.

As soon as you entered the main doors you were greeted by an original ‘Herbie’. Next to that, the newly revamped Volksworld Fridolin was on display and people could make a donation to charity to sit inside it and have their photo taken and then made into a replica front cover of the magazine. VW Heritage were also on hand to convert the giveaway Beetle into an Empi GTV replica over the course of the weekend. To one side was an artist creating paintings by dipping the tyres of remote control cars into paint and then driving them around on canvas.

SDC11483 SDC11497 SDC11498

When you left the entrance hall, you were immediately faced with the show cars. They were spread over 2 floors and this year, the variation and quality was breathtaking. There were too many to mention them all but the ones that stood out in my mind were the ‘Baja’d’ Brazilia, The Hammered Inc., roof chopped, split window Beetle, A Split powered by a mid mounted V8, a replica of a Tamiya Sand Scorcher, an insane New Beetle funny car, a ‘Steampunk’ inspired Split window Beetle and there was also a Hebmuller sat next to a custom hard top version. All of the above drove away with Top 20 awards for their efforts.

SDC11511 SDC11517 SDC11522

Outside, the SSVC put on their usual, excellent display and were joined by the Early Bay club and the T2D stand. The Type 2 Detectives had 3 of their best creations on display. The notorious ‘TV Bus’ was joined by their slammed Brazillia and the recently finished and stunning Mk 3 Golf which uses a Type 3 chassis and a Type 1 air-cooled engine to get it moving. This also won a well deserved Top 20 award, which is the first time a Golf had ever taken a prize at the show.

Outside, the club area was equally as busy with some excellent vehicles and inventive stands. ‘New Waves’ and ‘’The Panzer Paint Scrapers’ duelled it out once again with excellent displays and this year the former was the victor having supplied their own sound system to keep people entertained. The cars on display ranged from Bugs to Busses, Trekkers to 356’s and even some of the rarest VWs in the U.K namely an Australian Country Buggy and an Iltis.

After the show closed on the Sunday, the majority of people left with an exhausted smile on their faces. There were of course the usual online gripes over the following days concerning expensive food, a packed swapmeet and difficulty in parking but these are all a testament to how successful the show is. The Volksworld show is up there among the very best VW shows in the world and I’m already looking forward to 2011.

Special tribute at funeral of VW van fan Tony Minns

Farewell: Mourners carry the coffin at the funeral of Tony Minns.

Farewell: Mourners carry the coffin at the funeral of Tony Minns.

MOTOR enthusiasts paid “the perfect tribute” to a fellow petrolhead with a convoy of classic cars accompanying the cortege to his funeral writes Peterborough Today. Tony Minns died, aged 46, from a heart attack on December 14. The stepfather-of-two’s funeral was held yesterday, and his coffin was carried to Peterborough Crematorium in his beloved Volkswagen camper van, followed by family and friends in a variety of classic VW Beetles, Golfs and camper vans of all ages and colours.

Many of the drivers carried pictures of Mr Minns in the windows of their cars on the way to the service. Mr Minns, of East Lane, Morton, near Bourne, was a passionate member of the Alldubs Klub, a club for Volkswagen owners in Peterborough, and his fellow enthusiasts arranged for the poignant tribute. Today his wife, Anna Miners (47) said: “We arranged for his coffin to be carried in his camper van – which we called Charliebus – because that is where he said he spent the best years of his life. “Over the past couple of years we took a camper van trip around Europe and Scandinavia, which was a fantastic experience. “The support the club has given me since he died has been incredible. “He was passionate about his Volkswagen, and the convoy from the club is the perfect tribute to him.” Matthew Eames, from the club, said: “He was a great bloke who got on well with everyone. “We have had people want to come and pay their respects from all over the country. “We think this the convoy is what he would have wanted, and is a perfect tribute.”

Fat Face Campervan winner announced!

Posted by volkszone

Steve Ralph from Hertfordshire has been given the keys to drive away in Fat Face’s £35,000 original, split screen VW Campervan, ‘Zebedee’!

VW winner006

The best bit is he gets to keep it forever, after winning it in a massive competition that generated interest from as far afield as Australia and America! Steve just filled out his details in a Fat Face store and was randomly selected from the thousands that applied, desperate to get their hands on Zebedee.

Nov09008

Steve gets himself probably the best Christmas present he’s had for some time and will be able to do some serious festive posing in his new wheels! I couldn’t believe it when I got the call telling me I’d won it,” explains Steve, “in fact I’m still bouncing off the walls now! For 2010 we had planned to cruise along to the East Coast (Great Yarmouth) and travel the coastal road all the way down and round the country to Dorset (or as far as we can get in the time period). Doing this is Zebedee is going to be amazing and we would love for summer to be here now!”

The giveaway to win the 21 window split screen beauty was launched to celebrate Fat Face’s 21st birthday. It’s the second set of Campervan keys that Fat Face has given away; the first belonging to founder Jules Leaver who had to sell his (rather beaten up) camper to fund the early days of Fat Face. However, the same sense of loss was felt by Fat Face today as Steve drove Zebedee away! However, Fat Face was delighted with the huge level of interest the competition drove and reading the many bribing and begging letters to win the Camper also made for great reading!

There were also 5 Cheeky Weekend winners who get a Vanilla Split VW Campervan for the weekend. They were Brendan Steenkamp, Jason Harling, Claire Ballantyne, Joseph Goode and Andy Hilditch. Problem is they have to give the van back but they’ll be guaranteed a good time for at least a couple of days and they also get £150 of Fat Cash to splurge in store!

Keep an eye on Fat Face’s Community pages for more competitions, event details or general Fat Face cool stuff! You’ll also be able to track where Zebedee goes as Steve will be sending through details of his adventures in Zebedee! Check out www.fatface.com/community

Funeral firm uses VW hearse

Posted by volkszone

A MIDLAND funeral firm is offering Volkswagen fans the ultimate send-off – by using a VW hearse.

Clare Brookes and business partner Michelle Orton, both aged 35, created the hearse when they launched their unique funeral van three years ago.

The Atherstone-based pair, who are VW enthusiasts, spent £8,000 restoring it and following the company’s first funeral in December 2007, business has been booming.

It’s believed to be the only aircooled funeral fleet in the world.

Funeral Volkswagen Camper Van.

Clare and Michelle also offer bereaved families the choice of 3 stretched Beetle Limousines and bus/camper van fleet for funeral hire.

Clare said: “I have always loved VWs and so I thought to myself, ‘What would I like to go off in?’ I just thought, ‘Stick me in a camper van’. Her family are funeral directors and have a wedding car company so this was a natural progression.

“If that’s what I’d want, I thought there had to be a market out there.

“Our Hearse was born in 1972 and was a Mortuary body removal vehicle, so it was already a hearse.

Funeral Volkswagen Camper Van.

“we fully refurbished the exterior and interior and installed a coffin beir.” The van, which has hire charges starting at £400, has been used for more than 40 funerals nationwide. Clare said: “People will naturally interact with the van and touch it. It also breaks down the barriers and gives people something else to talk about at a funeral.

“While many families continue to prefer traditional funerals, an increasing number are now changing traditions in many ways.

“We are often called in to provide a tribute when a young person has died. The look of the VW can help brighten a very sad and difficult day.”

Nichola Green, who used the VW hearse for her father’s funeral said: “When my dad Brian passed away suddenly earlier this year my family were looking for a funeral service with a difference and which reflected him as an individual.

“Dad had seen the hearse at a classic car show and thought it was a great idea but we didn’t think we would be calling upon it quite so soon.

“While the day was a very sad occasion, the hearse looked brilliant when it arrived at our house. Dad would have been amazed.”

* The camper will be on display at the Classic Motor Show, running from November 13 to 15 at the NEC.
