Shelley Pearson to race (Top Fuel) at Flame & Thunder 2010

Posted by volkszone

Saturday 30th October 2010
Santa Pod Raceway – NN29 7XA
01234 782828

Santa Pod’s local ‘golden girl’ Shelley Pearson has confirmed today that she will race at the ‘Flame & Thunder’ event at the FIA venue on Saturday the 30th of October, 2010. The 27 year-old Northamptonshire racer recently joined the ranks of the Top Fuel elite, securing her licence with a show-stopping 4.98 second pass, instantly catapulting her into the record books as the fastest female driver in the UK and the second ever fastest licence run in Europe.

Clearly elated with her time, Shelley was quick to praise her supporting cast and thank them all for their efforts. ‘I’m delighted for everyone in the team that we got such a great final run,’ she said. ‘Obviously drag racing is in the family DNA, so I’m really pleased to return all the hard work that my Dad and our team have put in to get us here. I’ll try and back that performance up at Flame and Thunder – and if it’s at all possible, I’ll try and run even quicker!’

Shelley’s 8,000 horsepower Top Fuel dragster will also be joined by a Nitro-fuelled Funny Car, and they will both be firing off exhibition passes throughout the day, as well as the World’s fastest Jet-powered race cars. These brave souls strap themselves to over 10,000 horsepower of afterburning jet engine to cover the quarter mile in just over 5 seconds, at a shade under 300mph. Not for the faint hearted!

It’s not all drag racing however. An incredibly diverse range of acts and attractions means that throughout the day, a non-stop mix of action and amusement showcases some of the most prodigious talent and potent machinery ever to be gathered in one place.

Equally impressive and almost as loud is the Live Action Arena where the car-crushing talents of Santa Pod’s resident Monster Truck, Podzilla vies for attention alongside multiple Guinness World Record holder Terry Grant and his incredible stunt show. Mix in UKFMX, Britain’s best Freestyle Motocross team and leading quad bike showman Jason Smythe – and you’ve got the ingredients for a superb show.

Music fans will delight at the headline signing of ‘Here Comes The Girls!’. This superb tribute act tips its hat at acts like Lady Gaga, Cheryl Cole and The Saturdays. As easy on the eye as they are on the ear, this is one superb show that ticks all the boxes for fans of all ages. One for the ladies, James Sutton, better known as Ryan from Emmerdale, will also be at the show, meeting his fans and signing autographs.

From the sublime – to the ridiculous, ace car builder Perry Watkins will also be showcasing ‘The Flatmobile’ the World’s lowest car – and ‘Wind Up’ the World’s smallest vehicle. His 130 mph table and chairs, better known as ‘Fast Food’ will also be gracing the strip. Titan, the amazing 8 foot tall interactive robot will be walking amongst the crowd, delighting and terrifying in equal measure. The Black Knights Parachute Display Team will also be quite literally ‘dropping in’ later in the day with their unique display of skill and control, and if that wasn’t enough, Mark Jefferies will be putting on a stunning aerobatic display.

But there’s still more!, Drifting demos, Kids Entertainers and even a full funfair. Or why not take a pleasure flight in a helicopter and see the whole lot from the air? Or strap yourself into a genuine 2 seater dragster and blast up the quarter mile in a shade over 7 seconds!

But of course, it wouldn’t be Flame & Thunder without a spectacular firework display and huge bonfire – and this year, the Santa Pod team has really pulled out the stops to create a memorable evening. As the light dims, a fully sequenced firework display will delight the crowd.

With under 16s getting in for free, advance tickets starting at just £17 and more acts and attractions in one day than most show goers see in a whole year, it’s the essential family day out of 2010! Just don’t forget your hat and coat!

Santa Pod Present THE FIA ‘Main Event’ 2010

Posted by volkszone

Santa Pod Raceway, the home of European Drag racing, is already gearing up for one of Europe’s most prestigious Drag Racing meetings; The FIA Main Event! This hugely popular, televised extravaganza is the first round of the prestigious European Drag Racing Championship and features one of the largest race entries and most diverse list of machinery anywhere in Europe! Over 200 teams and 17 race classes make this event unrivalled for both the quality and quantity of racing. Make it a date in your diary now! – Friday the 28th to Monday 31st May.

Exemplifying the very greatest, fastest, loudest and craziest spectacles in drag racing, the entire weekend gathers the most brutal machines in Europe and pits them head to head in an epic display of rubber burning, nitro-snorting insanity! Both cars and bikes are represented, with many of the 8000bhp entrants able to hit an incredible 300 mph in well under 5 seconds!! If this wasn’t impressive enough, on the track in between racing will be the awesome Fireforce Jet Funny Car, plus Ronnie Picardo’s gravity defying Wheelie Truck.

Off-track action is equally as exciting with loads of entertainment and attractions aimed squarely at families looking for a great value day out or even the weekend away. Full camping facilities are available and under 16s even go for free! Adrenaline junkies will also love the car crushing Monster Trucks Podzilla and Swamp Thing attempting to out-jump each other in the Live Action Arena, along with the world record breaking Stunt Driver, Terry Grant and 2007 Stunt Riding Champion, Zoltan Angyal performing their own brand of automotive magic on four and two wheels respectively. Caroline Day, Marketing Manager of Santa Pod Raceway said, “We are delighted to be supporting the MS Trust at this year’s FIA Drag Racing Championships. The relationship has been building for some time and we hope to help by making our drag racers and fans more aware of the disease and of the hard work the Trust does to help. Much of this started when Drag Racing fan and MS sufferer Karen Aston contacted us over a year ago. She has become so hooked on our sport that she is now training up to become a drag racer herself and will entering her first Championship this year.”

15 reasons to attend Big Bang

Posted by volkszone

The Fun & Friendly Family VW Festival
23rd -25th April 2010
Santa Pod Raceway, Wellingborough, Northants. NN29 7XA
01234 782828

1. Drive your VW on the strip, whether it’s a Beetle, Bus or Golf, all shapes and sizes of VW are welcome for a mere £25 per day of unlimited runs. Just bring your driving licence and sign-on fee to the signing on office where you’re then set to run on the FIA approved track. You will also be able to collect free performance print-outs of each run showing a breakdown of speeds and times!

2. Kids Entertainment. Big Bang is the family VW show and with a great selection of kid’s activities all weekend, it’s no wonder. There are kids parties, face painting, circus whizz (kind of like a workshop for circus tricks where you come and go as you please) and of course, they get to enjoy the rest of the show along with the adults and big kids!

3. Live Action, There are a whole host attractions as well as the track including a Monster Truck display, 260mph Jet Funny Car, UKFMX, the UK’s best Motocross display team, a classic VW Beetle powered by with a mahoosive jet engine, BMX displays and much more!

4. Championship Racing. The VWDRC will be here to show you how it’s done with their specially prepped Drag Racing VWs. There are also a few other invitational classes including Super Modified and Street Eliminator so you can expect to see 7 second runs at over 170mph! There will even be a couple of sub-10-second bike classes to add even more variety to the track.

5. Live Music. As always at Big Bang, there will be the Big Top Marquee as well as the bar, both hosting Live Music for you to choose from, as well as Funky House and Anthems from DJandyB, LeeDagger and a tribute night with tributes to Duffy, Lady Ga Ga and Scissor Sisters plus loads more live bands. It’s all part of your ticket price. So no excuses for not getting them in!

6. Live Magic/Comedy. Magician Alistair Cook will be performing a live magic show with a twist as he provides even more entertainment for your viewing pleasure. But no, as good as he is, he can’t make your hangover disappear. Only bacon rolls can do that.

7. Traders. Owning a VW, the chances of you needing a part of some description will be quite high and with such a large number of traders together in one place, whatever you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find it here! Everything from sunglasses to branded surfwear is on site and don’t forget the Pod Shop for all of your camping needs, supplies and official show merchandise.

8. Autojumble. Not bothered about fitting all of the shiny parts to your VW as long as it does the job? The Big Bang Autojumble could be the answer! There are some great bargains to be had in this second-hand area and you might even find something rare and valuable! On the other hand, if you have a veritable scrapyard of second hand parts at home or just a handful of spares – the Autojumble is the ideal place for you to get it shifted.

9. Cars For Sale. Whether you’re looking for your dream ride or next project, be sure to check out the Cars For Sale area, as there’s bound to be something for you. For sellers, this is the perfect place to advertise your car as there’s nowhere else in the UK that you will find such a large number of VW enthusiasts in one weekend!

10. Show & Shine. Got an awesome custom car, rare original or restored stunner? Whatever species of VW it is, if it looks cool, get it into the Show & Shine on Sunday. It’s free to enter and you’ll be sure to have a crowd to appreciate your efforts. New for 2010 there will be a “Get Yer Rat Out” competition taking place on the Saturday. Due to the Show & Shine’s ever growing popularity they have even separated the rats from the shiners to ensure that no one gets turned away!

11. Handling Track. Straight lines not really for you? Well this is a great opportunity to show your skills with Big Bang’s handling track. Put your car through its paces in this track designed especially for those lighter, more nimble vehicles – and there’s even a trophy for the quickest time of the day!

12. Wired For Sound. Big Bang has its own radio station, Nitro FM on 96.2FM, tune in, either in your car or bus – or listen out to the on-site PA for some great tunes, useful information and reminders about what’s on and where. Also text in and get your message read out on the air! There was even a marriage proposal via this method once. No idea if she accepted though.

13. Designated camping areas. with Santa Pod’s huge grounds, The BB team has separated the camping areas to make the whole experience better for you. There is club camping, for those that want to display your cars in a prime area and reserve space for fellow club members, Family camping for those of you with ankle-biters, quiet camping for those that might just want a peaceful early night, but don’t have kids with you and finally general camping. Wherever you go, please respect your neighbours! A weekend away is no excuse to forget good manners.

14. Alternative Energy Racing. Turn up on the Friday and you will see an entirely different show altogether as Big Bang will be running alongside Alternative Energy Racing. Understanding the effects of the pollution and current world, (Pah!..allegedly.. BB!) Santa Pod Raceway is hosting this event to encourage environmentally friendly race cars and bikes. So, who knows? You could see the future of drag racing at this very event! Peace! Friday will also seethe buses from BWA and USB and the Cal-Look Bugs from Green Heart and SAS re-balancing the ‘carbon footprint’ on the track.

15. The final – and probably the best reason to go to Big Bang – is the price! For a mere £35 on the gate you get access to see everything listed above. Your camping and parking is included, grandstand seats are free, entrance to the music and magic shows are free, you can even enter your own vehicle into the Show & Shine and have a go at the Handling Track, Baja Course, Art Bug and Human Powered Racing for no extra cost! There are many more reasons to attend, but these 15 should give you some idea – miss it – miss out!

Santa Pod Raceway present The Easter Thunderball. Cracking Good Fun!

Posted by volkszone

2nd – 5th APRIL 2010
Santa Pod Raceway, Wellingborough, Northants. NN29 7XA.
01234 782828

Santa Pod Raceway, the home of European Drag racing has provided the perfect solution to entertaining yourself – and the whole family for the entire Easter weekend; The Easter Thunderball!

From the 2nd to the 5th of April 2010, Santa Pod will rock the surrounding Northamptonshire countryside with an unashamed spectacle of incredible racing, stunt shows and the best of Europe’s entertainers – including none other than Peter Andre!

This is the only ‘Nitro Shoot-out’ in Europe! So, if your idea of fun is watching an 8,000 horsepower car hitting 300mph in just 5 seconds, then this is the place for you. The entire weekend is packed with top-level racing including the multi-thousand horsepower Top Fuel cars, MSA pro mods and Drag bikes. If that doesn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, then witnessing the sight of two jet cars travelling at Mach 1 or Podzilla, Santa Pod’s very own Monster Truck, might just do it for you!

Add into the mix bike trials displays, wheelie cars and full bar and catering facilities and you’re talking a serious weekend of fun. Also new this year is a full-sized wrestling ring running full-on display bouts over all three days.

It’s not all high-octane madness however, with much of the content of the Easter Thunderball being squarely aimed at families. Not only do kids under 16 get in free (great in these credit crunched times) but the weekend line up includes a magnificent Firework display and even Titan, the 8 foot robot who walks amongst the crowd, amazing (and scaring) kids in equal measure. Stop by the static display of famous cars from “the movies” and see the new Land Speed Record “Bloodhound” car. Plus there’s a funfair, traders, kids entertainments and mini quad rides, meaning whatever the weather does, there’s plenty for the whole family to do.

But the headline stealer without doubt, is Peter Andre – stopping by on the very last day of his tour (the 5th) to perform hits from his latest album, ‘Revelation’. With tickets for his stadium dates all but sold out, this could be the perfect last chance to see him sing live this year.

Advance tickets start at just £10 for the Friday, £29 for the Saturday and Sunday – or only £39 for the whole four days. So, once you’ve factored in the free parking, free camping, free under 16s and free pit walkabouts, it just goes to show that amusing your clan this Easter needn’t leave you penniless!

For more information, or to book tickets, click to or call 01234 782828.

Santa Pod’s ‘Saturday Night Special’ 20th February 2010

Posted by volkszone

Santa Pod Raceway, the home of European drag racing has announced its first ‘Saturday Night Special’ (SNS) date for 2010. The 20th of February… and every kind of car and motorbike is invited!

As if drag racing your very own pride and joy wasn’t fun enough, Santa Pod’s SNS events let you race throughout the day, with the track firing up at 9am, and then on into the night, under the high output track lights in the most evocative atmosphere in motorsport. Think night racing is the exclusive reserve of professional Top-Fuellers, Le Mans stars and F1 legends? Think again!

For the usual fee of £10 admission plus your choice of sign-on fee, you’ll get the usual mix of ‘Run What You Brung’ goodness, with the freedom to exploit the ‘Pod’s ultra-grippy quarter-mile and FIA approved timing gear all day long. With the added advantage of passengers over the age of 17 now allowed to ride under race conditions, it’s the perfect day out for car clubs and enthusiasts.

As the light dims however, the action ramps up a gear, with Fireforce, the Pod’s own Jet Funny Car laying down some 270mph display runs and hard-charging racing continuing into the night. Then of course, it’s time to hit the on-site bar, enjoy an evening of free musical entertainment and sink a few beers. With free weekend camping for anyone purchasing a weekend admission ticket (£20 on the gate or just £15 in advance) you can really relax and enjoy yourself – and blow the froth of a couple in the process.

The gates open on Saturday at 8am. Signing on costs £30 per driver for unlimited runs from 9am to 9pm, £25 per driver for unlimited runs from 9am to 4pm, and £10 per driver for unlimited runs from 4pm to 9pm (weather and track conditions permitting). You’ll get full computerised timing slips on each run, measuring your reactions, terminal speed and total quarter mile time. Driving Licences required to run on the strip, but cars running under 110mph on the quarter mile don’t even require the driver to wear a helmet!

As one of life’s ‘must do’ automotive experiences, Drag racing at night rates right up there!. It’s cheap, it’s fun and it’s safe! And best of all you can swap heroic tales in the bar afterwards without worrying about your licence! See you there!

On 10th September 2009, longtime VWDRC Racer, Russ Fellows ran the Santa Pod quarter mile in 9.34 seconds at a crazy 150mph in his ‘street legal’, floorpan’d Bug at the Euro Finals.

Russ had just ran the quarter in 9.36 seconds the weekend before at the very popular VW Action event, also at Santa Pod. This undoubtedly makes him the quickest man in the UK in a full-bodied, floorpan’d VW.

Russ started Drag Racing his Bug back in the the early nineties in the old VWDRC ‘Street’ class and steadily progressed through ‘Super Street’ to ‘Modified’ winning many class championships along the way. When the VWDRC classes were re-structured Russ moved into VW Pro, where he still regularly competes.

VW Action also saw Russ inducted into both the VW Action 9-second Speed Club and the VW Action Hall Of Fame – where ‘movers and shakers’ from within the VW Scene are rewarded for their efforts with a VW Action ‘Oscar’. Never was there a more deserving case, Russ’s long term to commitment to ‘going quicker’ sets a wonderful example to all would-be racers.

VW Action also saw the last ever run up the dragstrip from another veteran VWDRC Racer, Brian Burrows. Brian has retired from drag racing and decided to bow out in style, whilst realising one of his all time ambitions – a launch in a Fuel Funny Car. The car in question belongs to the Shockwave team, who allowed Brian to rent a ride in the car during the night racing session at the VW Action event on Saturday 5th September. Both Santa Pod race directors, Darren Prentice and Ian Marshall were very complimentary about Brian’s burnout, stage and launch which certainly didn’t look like it was his first ever (and only) drive of a Fuel Flopper.

Brian has campaigned many different VWs in the VWDRC Race Series over the years – including winning a championship in the UK’s first ever New Beetle and more recently racing a gorgeous 1957 Oval Bug. His Outrage II VW Funny car still holds the world record for VW AF/C – set way back in 1993.

We at Volkszone would like to wish Brian a long and happy retirement and congratulate Russ on his amazing achievement(s). Way to go fellahs!
