Over the years, from the very first GTI Festival events in the late 1980s, the shows have attracted hordes of Volkswagen enthusiasts to several different venues around the UK. The GTI Festival and ‘Inters’ were for a decade or more, just about the only specialist water cooled VW events of the year. Now, we have a busy ‘calendar’. The 2011 GTI Festival is moving its date to the end of that busy calendar, to establish a ‘Final Fling’ season finale, before the time comes to put cars away for the close season, or pull them apart for mods or winter rebuilds.

The GTI Festival – ‘Season Finale’ is for enthusiasts of all VAG marques, SEAT, Skoda, Audi and of course Volkswagen. Now the Volkswagen Group includes Lamborghini, Bentley and Bugatti too, but the closest we will probably come to seeing any of those will be Bentley rims shoehorned under late Golf arches!

The GTI Festival is a show where all VAG vehicles are welcome with open arms. All clubs are invited to display during the day, and after a very well received revamp of the show layout in 2010, the clubs area is now easily able to accommodate the 40+ clubs who regularly attend the event. If you want your club to be part of the show, you need to act fast. The earliest club bookings get pride of place, and we expect to see a huge number of clubs and registers represented, so get in early! To book club displays call 01279 725252 or email: [email protected].

The new Volkswagen Golf Convertible comes to the UK in the summer. Let's hope the sunshine is close behind it!

The new Volkswagen Golf Convertible comes to the UK in the summer. Let's hope the sunshine is close behind it!

The first pictures of the new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet have been revealed ahead of the car’s public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week writes www.totallymotor.co.uk.

As the latest two-door, four-seat, front-engine soft top from the company, it will also be the first Golf Cabriolet available since the Mk IV Golf.

Still, with the new model comes plenty of updated technology. Above all, it boasts an electrically-powered soft-top which can be opened in just 9.5secs that can be operated on the move, at speeds of up to 18mph.

Although the name suggests this is a show with a niche audience, that presumption couldn’t be further from the truth. Each April Santa Pod Raceway near Northampton is swarmed with VWs of all shapes and sizes all coming to enjoy the show and either take part in or just to watch the drag racing action on the world famous strip.

SDC12015
It’s actually a show that welcomes all the current and past vehicles that come under the V.A.G marque. From classic Beetles to Golfs and the latest Audis, Seats and Skoda’s, everything that is related to Volkswagen is invited to take part.

Although only a one day affair, the show attracts a huge amount of interest and marks the first opportunity of the year for V.A.G fans to take part in drag racing exclusively amongst their peers.

SDC11978

I’ve been for several years in a row now and the show just keeps on getting bigger and better. This year was helped by a fantastic weather forecast and as soon as the gates opened at 8am, the cars started to pour in.

The show and shine filled up very quickly and by 11am there were around 200 cars lined up and being shined to death by their owners. The show operates a ‘Top 20’ award system which is the fairest way to ensure the most deserving cars walk away with trophies for their efforts.

The club area was also bursting and was filled to capacity with a huge variation of cars representing their various clubs.

Meanwhile, on the strip, rubber was being burnt all day long with the V.A.G only ‘Run What Ya Brung’. Trophies were awarded to the fastest cars in each of the classes and so people were doing their best to get in as many runs as possible especially because it was a lovely warm day and there was a helpful tailwind. The ‘fire up’ lane was packed all day.

The famous ‘Fireforce Jet Car’ wowed visitors with two sub-6 second passes during the afternoon and with a large number of traders plying their wares, there was plenty for the punters to see and do.

At the end of the afternoon, the trophies were handed out for the show and shine and the drag strip competition and they went to some very deserving participants. The number and quality of the cars on show meant the judges had a very tough job.

Janet Edwardson took top honours in the show and shine for her Lamborghini inspired Mk4 Golf and the main talking point of the day was Andy Waite running three sub-10 second quarter miles. The best was 9.8 seconds at 148 mph! The really crazy thing is that it’s a fully street legal car.

At the end of the afternoon, everyone who attended went home happy and looking forward to VAGfest on July 11th.

Well – it’s called the ‘GTI Spring Festival’, but the first major event of the water cooled VW season is actually aimed at every current and past model in the VAG group range. From Sciroccos and Golfs and Polos, through SEAT models, Ibiza, Cupra, Leon, Skodas, Audis – all are welcome at the show, which takes place at Santa Pod Raceway, Bedfordshire on 11th April 2010. The ‘GTI Spring Festival’ now in its fourth year, is now without doubt a very major season opener. With Sprinting (RWYB), Show & Shine, Clubs, Autojumble and Traders, it follows a simple formula which has been hugely popular. The show itself offers all day sprinting for a single signing on fee, which means you can make one run, or as many runs as you can make during the entire day. But don’t forget your driving licence (you cannot sign on for sprinting without it.)

The Show & Shine is one of the best in the country, with in the region of 100 contestants. There is no charge for entry into the Show & Shine, and it is becoming a popular show at which to debut new or revamped cars after the winter lay off. Gates open at 8.00am with the dragstrip open from 10.00am. There is plenty of opportunity to browse trade stands, check out the autojumble and club displays, as well as watch (or even try a few runs on) the dragstrip. Overseas visitors to the show will receive free admission on production of their ferry tickets/proof of travel, so perhaps we will see a few more European visitors this year.

Santa Pod itself is just about the best venue for this type of event in the whole of Europe, meeting all international timing standards. The timing equipment is accurate to within less than one thousandth of a second.

If you are looking for those increasingly rare parts, check out the GTI Spring Festival Autojumble to see if you can find that extra bit you’ve always wanted! All of the autojumble plots are in a designated area which is filled on a first come basis on the day, and usually full of bargains for the eagle eyed buyer.

So, please don’t forget – April 11th, Santa Pod. And once again – all watercooled VWs are equally welcome, Golf, Polo, Lupo, Passat, Jetta, Scirocco, Derby, Corrado, Bora, New Beetle, Sharan, Octavia, Fabia, Cupra, Leon – the list goes on. If you are a VAG lover, it’s the one day show for you!

VW Golf on the double

Posted by volkszone

Volkswagen welcomes a new addition to the Golf family for 2010, the Golf Wagon that replaces the Jetta Wagon in the lineup writes www.metronews.ca.

The Jetta Wagon is gone for 2010, replaced by a new Golf Wagon, the biggest Golf ever offered.

THE JETTA WAGON IS GONE FOR 2010, REPLACED BY A NEW GOLF WAGON, THE BIGGEST GOLF EVER OFFERED.

This is the sixth generation of the Golf, which has sold more than 26 million units around world in the past 35 years, making it the all-time best selling model for Volkswagen, surpassing even the legendary Beetle.

During those years, the Golf has also been known as the Rabbit in North America, but that name is gone for 2010 as the car returns as a Golf on this side of the ocean.

They still make that? VW Golf Mk1 ends production after 35 years

Posted by volkszone

The original Volkswagen Golf Mk1 arrived as a replacement to the Volkswagen Beetle way back in 1974 writes autoblog. Sold in the States as the Volkswagen Rabbit, the early front-wheel-drive hatchback had a transverse-mounted (water-cooled) 1.5-liter four-cylinder rated at just 70 horsepower. It was good for a 93 mph top speed and nearly 38 miles per gallon. While the standard Rabbit was rather ho-hum, the late-to-arrive Mk1 “GTI” ushered in the hot-hatch movement with its 90-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, slick manual transmission, and upgraded suspension. It was a seriously cool car.

GOLF

In 1984, Volkswagen introduced the Golf Mk2. As the successor was bigger, wider, and more expensive than the original – and customers may have been turned-off by the “improvements” – VW chose to continue the Mk1 production and sell it as the low-cost Econo Golf, or CitiGolf.

Over the past 25 years, more than 500,000 units of the venerable Mk1 have rolled out of a South African assembly plant for sale in markets abroad. Variants have been fitted with a wide range of engine choices (both gasoline and diesel), from 1.1-liters up to 1.8-liters of displacement. Transmissions have included 4- and 5-speed manuals, plus the (obviously outdated) 3-speed automatic. Lacking nearly all of today’s necessary safety equipment (a driver’s airbag was eventually fitted), time finally caught up with the CitiGolf this summer and the South African plant was closed in late August.

Interesting side note: the tooling used to build the CitiGolf all these years in South Africa was reportedly originally used to make the Rabbit at Volkswagen’s Westmoreland plant in Pennsylvania.

Every man’s ride

Posted by volkszone

It started as a blue-collar sports car. The Mk 5 was superb but the latest Golf GTI is truly astonishing, writes Thomas Falkiner of The  Times Za.

If there was an award for the most politically correct car, it would probably be handed to the legendary Volkswagen Golf GTI. A snappy performance hatchback, born classless and strangely free from the elitism that usually manifests itself in machines of such superior stature, the Golf GTI is the original auto diplomat; an everyday motoring icon with an uncanny ability to hit home with an unbelievably wide spectrum of petrolheads.

Seriously, whether you’re a bling- packing wheeler-dealer from the Cape Flats, a black-diamond businessman with a taste for tailored suits or a peroxided brawler from the bad side of Boksburg, those three letters — GTI — shatter the cultural divide and stir up driving hopes and aspirations. It’s an impressive automotive feat that’s long been imitated by many of VW’s rivals and, more importantly, one that’s been going strong since the spirited original upset the motoring status quo back in 1976.

The MK1 Golf GTI — boxy, upright and relatively uncom- promising by today’s standards — was one of the most significant cars to emerge from the ’70s. Conceived in secret over beer and sandwiches by a handful of Volkswagen engineers who felt the company needed a proper sports model, this hot version of the Giugiaro- designed Beetle replacement offered the masses sports-car performance on a blue- collar budget. Almost overnight, the feisty little German vehicle made comparatively “exotic” performance coupés like Britain’s MGB seem slow, clunky and about as involving to drive as a horse-drawn trap. A German car magazine, Auto Motor & Sport, said: “Climbing up an Alpine pass in the GTI is one of the most exciting driving tasks a car enthusiast can have.”

VW EARNINGS FEEL IMPACT OF FINANCIAL CRISIS – BUT STILL AHEAD OF RIVALS

Posted by volkszone

Volkswagen (VW) yesterday reported a smaller-than-anticipated decline in profit for the second quarter and said growth in emerging markets would help the Audi owner outperform the industry in the second half.

Second-quarter net income fell 83 percent to E283 million (R3 billion) from a year earlier, Europe’s largest car maker said. Profit beat the E238.6m median estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales slid 7.7 percent year on year to E27.2bn. The shares rose as much as 4.9 percent in Frankfurt trading.

VW'S LATEST GOLF

VW'S LATEST GOLF

VW’s first-half worldwide car and sports utility vehicle deliveries dropped 5 percent, less than the 18 percent industrywide contraction, as gains in China and Brazil buffered declines in European countries such as Spain and the UK.

The maker of Skoda and SEATcars last week won a battle to combine with Porsche after staving off a takeover attempt by the 911 sports-car maker.

“VW is feeling the impact of the crisis, no doubt, but they’re still performing comparatively well,” said Aleksej Wunrau, an analyst at BHF Bank in Frankfurt. “VW’s liquidity is high and inventory cuts were lower than at competitors.”
