Plenty of modified bugs about; stock ones, particularly really tidy ones, are a rare commodity these days.

Been a while since i posted on here but been very busy with the mexi.
I sorted the oil leak and then decided to put it in for an mot, which i thought would be straight forward - how wrong was i!!
Have always had air cooled vdubs since passing my driving test in '82, including beetles, bays, karman ghias, Type 3's, and T25's but have never been as disappointed as i was when i went to collect this beetle from the mot station - the list of fails and advisories was as long as my arm ( or so it felt at the time ), the idea of having the rest of the week off work to drive and enjoy the beetle had just turned into a feeling of ' what have i done?
I decided to park the beetle in my garage and walk away from it for a few days and decide on a plan - my initial reaction was to get rid, but the more i thought about it and the fact that, although its failed the mot, it is in fact a superb example of a mexi.
A few days passed and after studying the fail sheet again, it was obvious id over reacted slightly and things weren't as bad as i initially thought.
The fails were basically, both lower ball joints, n/s front flexi brake hose, a couple of small areas of corrosion, front wheels catching on suspension when on full lock left and right, and the list went on to some advisories including slightly notchy steering.
So, night after night for the last two weeks and weekends, with the help of a very good friend, we have methodically worked our way through the car from front to back and replaced, both lower torsion arms including ball joints, both front n/s and o/s flexi brake hoses, installed a brand new steering box (and adjusted steering lock to lock ), cleaned up all earths on lighting as also had advisory for rear lights, welded two small areas at rear, seam sealed and protected these areas and finally on Friday she was tested again, almost three weeks after initially failing and all the hard work and late nights were rewarded with a pass without any advisories.
Now shes developed another oil leak, not sure where from at the moment, definitely not from pushrod tubes as it appears to be towards engine/gearbox area but for now shes parked up again in the garage happy in the fact she is mot'd.

Flywheel oil seal maybe???
Had it been sat up or not used much for a good while before you bought it?

It was used, albeit judging by miles since the last mot, not too much. My thoughts are the flywheel oil seal, but ive decided to book it into a local aircooled specialist and let them sort it for me - will update once i get it back

Could anyone in the know, advise how long you would expect a specialist to take to change the flywheel oil seal ( if this ends up being the source of the oil leak )?

2 hours at most, if its a stock engine. Although I've done it in an hour before. I would advise you read me thread on oil seals though and would recommend you source your own one.

Many thanks for this, im taking the beetle into garage Thursday afternoon but will be next week before they can get to it, im in no rush but if, as i think, they diagnose this oil seal, i'll will ensure a viton seal is used as replacement,
