Part 2...
After a glitch with the matrix (probably too many posts) made the last 12 days posts disappear on my 1970 1300 i've started the second part. The first part was mostly the rebuild and repaint over the past 15 or so years.
Its still available here to view but its now locked to avoid any further posts.
About time i showed you my '70 1300.

I decided i wanted a kamei style rear parcel shelf with an opening hatch (but made of more solid materials than the thin hardboard the kamei ones are) so bought a sheet of 1/2" ply and got to work shaping it to fit.
The hatch is slightly narrower than the one on a kamei shelf as the sides weren't wide enough for my speakers to sit on.

I glued some padding on and stapled some of the leftover perforated vinyl from the headliner i made on top.

Bought some cheap chrome screw button cap things off ebay to break up the plain vinyl and to give it a button draylon sofa look of the 70s. I also used an old glovebox knob so it can easily be opened.

Blue Rectangle Textile Wood Pattern

Still waiting for my ebay speakers to arrive from Hong Kong from the look of it (even though the ad said from the UK ) so i can't fit it yet. :(

Brilliant  love that sort of stuff, great history with the car

I loved the FL4T / Total VW mag (still have the FL4T sticker in rear window of bug) as was more grassroots every day bugs etc and their stories, could identify with them more than the show standard stuff you could never aspire too (always reminds me of the parody someone did of sunscreen years ago "never read VW magazines they'll just make your car look ugly")

Yeah, fl4t and then total were cool. I've still got the complete run of mags.
There were a lot less of the high cost builds in those mags.

I found the daily drivers bit from vwmotoring.

Most of the feature car articles in Volksworld i tend to skim through as they just don't do anything for me. Bodywork and paint by..., engine by..., interior by... etc. Cheque book restos. With enough money anyone can build (or pay to be built) a generic show car, though its the extra details that make it stand out from the crowd.

I build mine for a bit of fun (not that 2020 has brought much :().
I think its done 72 miles since its MOT in December.

I only subscribed to Volksworld just before lockdown as found it hard to get locally when I wanted it, which was generally if there was a particular car featured. Just wanted to have something to read when I'd a few minutes to myself.

If the like of Total Vw started up again it would be great. Dubscene was a good read too but only lasted a few issues............... there's a gap in the market there again I'd say for something similar............. anyone want to take the bull by the horns :) although wouldn't have huge international sales.

As the weather is so crap today i decided to have a play in the garage and try and work out what the wiper linkage is catching making it clonk.
Turns out it was one of the plastic hoses for the centre demister vent. Easy fix. :)

Spare is still holding air nicely which is more than can be said of the drivers side front which constantly drops down to 13.5psi. Doesn't go any lower than that no matter how long i leave it so i might whack 50psi in it and see how long it takes (or if it just needed a higher psi to seat the tyre properly).

Checked the front wheel alignment while i was in the garage. 0.5 degrees negative camber and a lot more toe in than it should have so gonna have a play and see if i can get it within specs.
Centered the steering box i think. The pitman arm is at 90 degrees to the beam anyway. Marked the centre line of the car using high tech string and some chalk.
Gave up as the cold finally got to me so i'll have another look tomorrow.

Didn't realise you could see the centering mark on the steering shaft through the steering box adjustment access hole.
Its definately centered now, though it shows the steering wheel to be 1/12 of a turn off centre.
Seems theres 3.5cm (yes cm) of toe in instead of 2-4.5mm.

Undid the 3 locking clamps on the tie rods but the last one with the two lock nuts tried my patience as my spanner set only goes up to 19mm. The smaller of the two nuts i managed to undo with an old 7/8" (about 22mm ish) spanner i found but i can't find anything to undo the larger nut. Is it actually a threaded nut as someone on facebook suggested it is just tapered.

Checked the distance between the wheel rim and side of the front beam and its within 1/2 a mm side to side at the staight ahead position. Close enough for me.
I'll still put it in for a front end alignment but its ÂŁ25 i could be spending on other things.

I'd painted the hubs on mine silver, not a bling thing just discovered that it was a lot easier to find the bolt holes when putting a wheel back on in the dark lol Actually did a circle around the rear drum holes for same reason.

What's up with it alignment issues?

#409 ·
There was 3.5cm of toe in (10x what it should be) for some reason. Think it was possibly an oversight when i first set it all up.
That was probably the cause of the 70s tyre squeal round corners.
If its dry tomorrow i'll use it to go shopping and find out.

With black hubs it is a bugger seeing where the bolt holes are.
I was gonna make a couple of screw in studs i could temporarily wind in by hand to seat the wheels but never found any 14mm allthread or long enough bolts i could cut the heads off.

I went to a local nut and bolt specialist and got a couple of long bolts to cut the heads off as guide bolts, so much easier to put the sprints on, especially the rear!

Went out to do the shopping yesterday and as i was driving my daily down the road i remembered i was gonn take the bug out.
It rained anyway when i was coming back so i'll just take it for a run out later once i've used the good weather to get the last of my caravelle welded up.

Took the bug out for a run to Lidl this afternoon.
Tyre squeal has now gone but the steering wheel is at the 1 o'clock position rather than 12 when driving in a straight line.
Steering wheel is straight with the steering box at its centre position.

Theres also an annoying clunk from the passengers side B pillar i think when you go over a bumpy bit of road. Not sure if its the door latch or something in the rear suspension at that side.
Its due a MOT in 3 weeks time so i'll have to have a poke around.

Took the rear wheel off and supported it at ride height to cheack clearances and look for things that were loose.
Theres about a fingers width of space between the bump stop rubber and its stop. The clunk sounds like metal to metal contact so i don't think its that.
The Z bar rubber is in contact with the cup on the axle though.

Didn't find any loose bolts and the torsion bar grommets and shock bushes are new as were the gearbox mounts so i'm a bit stumped.
