The Subie motor is so very alike to the VW donk. Almost makes me wonder just how much of that comes from WW2 with Germany and Japan being allies or is it just pure coincidence

VW sold the flat 4 design to subaru in 79 ish, so their engines are an improvement on that design. Could be balls though ha ha.
Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised as by 79 there was the wasserboxer IIRC so Subie just had to improve on this design and have a compact 5 main bearing 4 cylinder engine
