Engineering Tech A Q & A Forum devoted to Engineering Issues that don't necessarily fall into Aircooled or Watercooled Tech. Got a problem? Or an engineering question? Even a buildings or property engineering question? Then ask in here. Please, no 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads and "Who Can Sell Me A . . ." posts.

Default Anyone know about brushless motors?

I've got a clarke wood working lathe that runs really really slowly. Maybe 10 revs per minute instead of the 500rpm the lowest speed should be.

Its got a 370w brushless motor the size of a beetle starter motor and a massive capacitor on the side but other than that theres not much to it, just an on of switch. The speed is adjusted by adjusting the position of the drive belt a bit like on an old DAF cvt transmission.

I'm not really sure where to look or what to test.
I assume the capacitor is used to start it but does it also need it to continue running?
It looks like the capacitor is only available as part of the motor assembly for 160+ from clarkes parts department if its at fault.

Its the same model as this:

If it sounds like it wants to start but just quite can't, it's probably the capacitor. It's only used to start it. There should be some markings on it something like XXuF XXVAc XX/XXX/XX to enable you to buy a replacement from elsewhere a lot cheaper, probably under 15.

I does sound like it. I found some info on a woodturning site with a link to this video. Looks like the same lathe and the same problem and it was the capacitor.

I can see 500v 10uf on one side but without removing it from its mount on the motor i couldn't make out the rest of the writing.

Managed to find a replacement with the same values and dimensions for a grand total of 6.88p.
Just need to work out where i put the solder for my soldering iron now.

Replaced the capacitor and pressed the on button and it spun up to speed nicely.

Father in law is gonna make me a wooden gearknob for my bug like this now as he has a load of timber offcuts including some nice mahogany and zebra wood.
