So my camper no longer starts from the key. But I've noticed when turning key in ignition the headlights turn off? Is this normal? Could this be a clue to wgats wrong? Any help greatly appreciated

Yes, that is normal from 1971 it is a load reduction function to help the battery turn the starter motor.
You need the check the wiring (red/black cable) from the ignition switch to the starter motor, usually, it is a connection problem where it connects to the starter motor.

Its a crossover westy so that makes sense. Would it rule out the ignition switch being faulty because of its ability to turn off lights?

No,the starter contacts in the ignition switch have to switch around 30A so they can burn out.
