Engineering Tech A Q & A Forum devoted to Engineering Issues that don't necessarily fall into Aircooled or Watercooled Tech. Got a problem? Or an engineering question? Even a buildings or property engineering question? Then ask in here. Please, no 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads and "Who Can Sell Me A . . ." posts.

Not really, no.
I get how they work and their applications, fitted many a key. I was asked the other day about the taper though and it honestly has me stumped having never had to machine a hub for one.

Shaft parallel.

Key tapered.

Bore parallel.

There’s a formula for calculating key sizes, although when ever I have had to cut one (not for decades), I used the tables in my Machinery’s Handbook.

I can photograph and post up the relevant pages if you like, but I’m sure they’re available online somewhere.

Glen if you could that'd be fantastic.
I had an apprentice ask about them at work that's all. I had always taken it as a given that both the shaft and the bore were to be parallel and the key tapered as you say but when he challenged me (and fair play to him for using his noggin) I said I'd try and find out for sure.
