Think hammerite is oil based, I've always found that oil based will paint over anything without an issue. However most paints seem to react with oil based when painting over it! It can also be very annoying to sand back again and really clogs the sandpaper etc

I had someone media blast and powder coat mine black.

Then I got Avenue Coatings near Slough to colour match Lotus White by scanning the glove box cover, and did the outer rims myself. Used rattle cans, which was a doddle.

Used a Scotch pad to carefully key the outer rims, some fine line tape and masking, and all 5 came out well.

I'd done the same with a set of 5.5" steels I had, far better job. I never got round to painting the rim white and after they sat in the garage for 5years sold them on.
Blasting and powdercoating cost 30 a wheel though, probably more now, compared with about 20 paint etc plus your time to diy them.

I did mine over a period of a couple of years and it did cost about 30.00 a wheel, so it wasn't as much of monetary shock...

But it saved the ball ache of rubbing down 5 dirty, rusty wheels. Plus pretty sure if you applied a decent amount of paint, you'd be over that 30 figure for each wheel, and you get a decent, even finish.

Think at the time cost me around 30 to do all 5 wheels, but I was a student so had time to do it and used it daily so couldn't have done with the hassle of getting tyres removed and not having wheels on it for a while. I don't think I'd have either the time or patience to do now though!
