Schwimmers is my particular thing, so here are some 166 photographs.

The British Army were very interested in the little vehicles, and assembled a few at the Volkswagen plant to be used by the occupying forces in the immediate post war period.

Here are some being tested by our guys - even taking out ‘ensa’ Girls on the water

Now, how about posting your favourite old VWs?
Let’s see them

Here's a pic for you Slugger . I assume this is another allied soldier driving the Schwimmer. What's the plane with the D-day markings?

Rally bugs and 'Old Speed' is my bag - I love the no-nonsense look of them and how they perform better than VW meant them to.
When Bob Beales took me round Lydden Hill circuit in his bug, sideways at 60mph round the corners, it was one of the biggest thrills of my life!
Here he is in the first pic.

Great photos - they have a wonderful sense of period.
And that certainly sounds like a thrilling experience !
Everyone, back in the day was called ‘Bob’

Is that Beetle sporting Ford ‘wide 5s’?

And, the plane is a P38 lightening - those are the aircraft that donated their long range fuel tanks to the famous post war ‘Lakesters’ or belly tank racers.

Some 'back in the day' Cal-Look/Gasser racers . . .

And then 'subtler' DKP-style Cal-Lookers . . .

Various rally shots including the 1963 RAC Rally and maybe the start of the Monte Carlo rally and another pic of the same driver but different car in the snow. Also a 4 wheel drive Type 86.

These days I own two Bugs . . . as 'mild' custom '62 in Blue and a 'Factory Stock' '66 in Beige.

That pic of Tar Babe up there ^^^^. My mate Jonny has its fibreglass bonnet! The real one. I nearly spat my beer out when he told me. It's doing sterling service on his drag car 'Miss White' at the moment.

Dad's 68model 1200 from around 1971/2. I've blanked two older bro's faces lol
I'd love to get the reg for mine but not a chance now. Think it met a sorry end in mid/ late 70s.

This was the one that started it all for me. From the North of England to the south of France. Would love to know if it’s still out there. Reg: OBV 110H
