Readers Rides Post pics, specs and build-up stories of your vehicles - or even your garages here. Also interesting stuff about your 'daily drivers' etc. or interesting cars you have seen on your travels, even motors-based TV shows you can recommend. Please, no 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads and "Who Can Sell Me A . . ." posts. After months of hesitation on my side, the '72 GT will arrive home with me within the next ten days.
The underside, floors and channels are in superb condition, the bodywork however does need a little work and then a respray, but it will be driven for a while before work commences.
My aim is to do as much as possible myself to keep costs as low as i can, but the eventual respray will hopefully be done by someone other than myself.
The car is currently wearing a '1300S' badge but ive already sourced a 'GT Beetle' badge as i prefer it to the '1300S'.
The other big item i need to source or rectify is the interior, it should have a beige cloth interior with matching door cards but currently has a black interior - if anyone knows of a GT interior or a company who produces a beige cloth interior, please leave a comment.
Anyhow, heres a couple of pictures of the GT from last year when i first viewed it.

Went to the current owner last night to pay for the beetle and was very surprised to be given a file full of history, a photo album of a full nut and bolt resto in the '90's along with many spare parts as well as a full set of five GT wheels - awaiting confirmation from Phil Unsworth who has kindly agreed to transport it to mine - cant wait!

Nice. Mine came with no history and its virtually impossible to find out anything now due to the GDPR.

Finally, at lunchtime today the GT arrived home, since spent a couple of hours looking over it and other than the bodywork, which i already knew was a little rough in places, it honestly seems pretty decent.
Its a two owner beetle having been with the last owner since 1st July 1979, she underwent quite a comprehensive restoration in the early '90's which has certainly helped preserve her. The floors and channels, bottom of the A pillars are solid and rot free, all four bumper mounts are free of rot, and after a good couple of hours of searching, ive not yet found any areas that require welding work - im sure that comment will come back to haunt me, but fair to say, the floor pans and channels are in need of no work other than a good brush down and a good coat of POR15 or something similar.
The bodywork on the other hand, is in need of attention.
I'll start at the front n/s and work my way around.
Rust is present in the front quarter, looks bad, but hasnt eaten through and is not what i would describe as soft, see pics

Next is the passenger door, havent yet decided what to do, the bottoms were repaired with new metal during the resto and have certainly stood the test of time, but as you can see from the following pics of the door, some work is definitely required

Next is the front scuttle, rust again at both corners but ive certainly seen worse

Walking around the car, the n/s rear quarter is ok, all fours wings are ok, engine lid and rear panel, again all ok. Bottom of gutters on each side both seem fine,

Moving round to the o/s, and again the drivers door is similar to the passenger door, the bottom is once again ok, but as can be seen rust has taken hold further up

Next, the front o/s quarter panel has rust, although in the pic it looks bad, it isnt soft and under the bonnet is fine

Finally the bonnet, this has been hand painted around the hanlde and the vents - will definitely be looking for a new one

Thankfully, the engine appears to be in good order; no end float, no leaks, idles fine and after just having a drive around for a couple of miles, she goes well.
So there it is, the GT ive been promising myself for over twelve months is here, not sure yet how deep im going to go, but certainly be getting a respray and i'll source a new interior.
Im sure this list is going to grow, but atm, parts required:
Bonnet
Passenger Door (maybe)
Drivers Door (maybe)
Beige interior including seat covers and door cards
Tunnel tray.
