Just collected the beetle from the specialists where i took it last week after discovering another oil leak.
My gut feeling was right in that it was the flywheel oil seal, which has now been replaced with a viton seal as discussed above and im pleased to report that all is well again, its running great and not a single drip of oil. As previously promised, i'll try and take a few pictures of it over the weekend showing what a good, straight unmodified mexican beetle this is.

And finally, the clean engine - the air pipes will get replaced in the very near future

That does look very solid. That'll save you months of welding.

All the underside is nicely sealed, clean and tidy, the inner wings are all original colour - tempted to coat with waxoil rather than schultz or similar.

Will do, ive a habit of finding a decent one and instead of keeping, continue searching for others for sale and then regret selling - made this mistake numerous times over the years

That's very nice indeed, and I spot some daymoulding wings as well. Looks like someone has given a solid Mexi a nice respray and some decent wings. If look after, it should last for many years.
