Default Rot and stuff.

I think you got the right idea getting in someone that knows what they are doing. There are loads of different variations but two basic types. One is a cladding for going over sound wood which is great "IF" the wood is sound. If it isn`t, as said before you are compounding problems for later on big styleee. The other is a much more robust / thicker / stand alone type of facia that is a wood replacement. If you have a few issues with rot at the moment then the second one sounds the way to go but you also need to check how far the rot has gotten into the rafters and joists and sort that at the same time. The other issue with the second type is that the facia generally supports the lower sections of tiling and removing it and the rot may let your tiles drop and if not put back correctly could also give you issues later on. Pay a lot of attention to the detail at the eaves (bottom ) of the roof generally at the corners which may be hips or gables or flashed to an abutment. Take photos of the genaral roof line as is, and after. I`ve seen so many done but these details done so poorly that it looks wrong. Facias are the bit you are staring at and usually have gutters fixed to them, soffits are the bit underneath that usually go from the back of the facia to the wall of the house. Barge boards generally are on an angle finishing off the gable / pine end (pointed bit of wall). Last thing make sure that the expansion joints are not fixed as some do, there should be no filling in with silicone mastic and all fixings should be plastic or stainless. Maybe put some photos up of your place and I could tell you what all the " weird " names are so you know what someone is rattling on about, not back on till this afternoon /evening
