Engineering Tech A Q & A Forum devoted to Engineering Issues that don't necessarily fall into Aircooled or Watercooled Tech. Got a problem? Or an engineering question? Even a buildings or property engineering question? Then ask in here. Please, no 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads and "Who Can Sell Me A . . ." posts.

Default Gas Soldering Iron

Any recommendations?
Got a decent mains one for 90% of things but I often find myself wishing I could make a join, melt some heat shrink etc in the car.
Seen plenty on eBay etc but would rather pay a little more and get one that lasts more than 5 minutes

I have an “Iroda” one. Seems ok. Bought it from Maplins on a deal. To be honest, I’ve barely used it, but it works fine and you fill it up with lighter gas, so no need for anything special in the way of fuel.

I also have an Iroda.
Plenty hot compared to a 240v one.
Only downside is getting butane as many supermarkets no long stock it.
I had to get some through ebay in the end.

I tried my local Sainsburys and Tesco tobacconists with no luck.
Both said they no longer stock butane refills.
Maybe it's just my area.

Have you tried a local newsagents or a pound shop?
edit: Where are you that you can't by a can of lighter gas?

I use a portasol daily and apart from the usual filter and tip change it’s spot on.Good heat output as well!

I've got a Dremel Versatip which does the job quite well. Certainly gets hot enough!
