We have got a 65 bug with short axles and run 1 1/2 inch solid banded wheels with 195P6 tires its lowered 2 splines and fills the rear arch with nice clearance . Your axles are longer so not sure how wide you can go

Why band wheels when it will be a lot cheaper and much much safer to substitute 6" or 7" steel rims on the original centres?

I have a 66 with a 2" band on the rears and 195/65 tyres and a 2" drop on the rear. It rides fine. I would go for a 2" band as you don't see much of a difference below 2" inches.

My wife's wheels are away just now getting 1" for rear it all down to look your going for

Mine is subtle/slight twist on factory standard

Is there a source of new rims, or were you suggesting removing some from some used wheels off another car?

Its definitely a better idea if the rims are available.
