Chat/Discussion Kind of like a VW club online - you can sit in our virtual pub and talk about whatever you want to. All opinions are valid, but please no insulting (other than to our intelligence,) abusive or libellous posts. Please feel free to post your opinion on any given subject, but also be aware that others have the equal right to disagree with you - and some will certainly tell you so. No 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your business, links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (please use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled "What's my car worth?" threads too (please use the 'Dude! What's My Car Worth?' forum) - and please don't use just to post links to other VW forums or websites - we are aware that other sites exist (obviously), but blatant 'plugs' (poaching) will simply be deleted.

Default One for the history buffs.

This is the first Bookmaker's Certificate to be issued in the Manchester and Salford area.

It belonged to my Great Grandad, that's him in the photo.

Sorry about the sideways images, no matter how I save the images on the computer they come out this way and I can't be bothered with the hassle of using a hosting site.

Cool.

My mum (R.I.P.) was a bookie - she started working for John Moores (Littlewoods) straight from school, both in the pools offices and in the bookmakers.

As an aside, the introduction of the National Lottery, basically killed the Football Pools overnight.

Very cool that you have the certificate Sol.

I think we've (or maybe with Mr S) chatted/typed about it before and I said I'd dig out the certificate.

The family legend has it that whoever had the idea for the pools approached my great grandad for financial backing..... he told him it was a stupid idea and to go and see that Moores bloke in Liverpool.

A bit of background on the pools.

https://www.onlinebetting.org.uk/bet...all-pools.html

There's probably an element of truth in my relatives being approached, as they worked in Manchester.

Yeah, we've had this discussion before. My mum always said that Moores 'nicked' the idea off another bloke.

The very first pools coupons were 'sold' outside Old Trafford - Moores himself would walk up and down the queues I believe.
