Chat/Discussion Kind of like a VW club online - you can sit in our virtual pub and talk about whatever you want to. All opinions are valid, but please no insulting (other than to our intelligence,) abusive or libellous posts. Please feel free to post your opinion on any given subject, but also be aware that others have the equal right to disagree with you - and some will certainly tell you so. No 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your business, links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (please use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled "What's my car worth?" threads too (please use the 'Dude! What's My Car Worth?' forum) - and please don't use just to post links to other VW forums or websites - we are aware that other sites exist (obviously), but blatant 'plugs' (poaching) will simply be deleted.

I`ve often toyed with the idea of an old coach...Leyland Leopard or something, and going completely "off grid".
The tacho thing is a definitely a funny area when it comes to horse boxes. I think you have to have a living area...which you would have.

I considered buying a large horsebox as an alternative to a container, primarily for storage, but it looked like I may have needed to have an operators licence..so I canned it.

The problem with an old bus or coach is finding somewhere to park it! My partner used to live in a Bedford "Chinese 6" and she always struggled to get it parked... and they've got no ground clearance for getting into fields

I don't think you need an operators licence for private use. As soon as it's for hire or reward you do, but there's exemptions there too, military, certain recovery, snow ploughs (I once had a chat about driving one of these), plus weight and build date exemptions.

O Licence needed for "Hire and Reward"
Moving own property about- No O licence needed
Banger Racer using own truck to move car- O Licence needed if there is possible opportunity to win a Trophy (same as Horse Racing). come home with a rosette you're likely to be in "Hire and reward" status.
Someone I know collects scrap metal in vehicle above 3.5t. When he collects he has invoice for sale of metal. It's then his property. No problem with that although has been through the courts, found not guilty.
If you wanted to buy a large vehicle purely for private use as long as you hold the correct entitlement on Driving licence then no problem.
