Engineering Tech A Q & A Forum devoted to Engineering Issues that don't necessarily fall into Aircooled or Watercooled Tech. Got a problem? Or an engineering question? Even a buildings or property engineering question? Then ask in here. Please, no 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your 'business', links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled 'What's My Car Worth?' threads and "Who Can Sell Me A . . ." posts.

Default Convert Aircooled to electric

Does anyone know how much it would cost to convert my 1970 beetle to electric?

And does anyone thing it’s currently a viable option considering the direction the government is going with regards to fuel?

Thank you in advance for your opinions

Check out “fully charged “ video on YouTube there’s a company here that converts them. Several other vids as well. Not cheap to do

I've been looking into this for a while now, I thought it would still be 3-5 years until I would be looking to change but now I think it will be a lot quicker.

Have a look at https://www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/ they are currently doing a direct drive ute for themselves, one of the things i've been waiting for, say bye to the gearbox

I had a quote a few months ago from them, 25k with 100 mile range and the equivalent of the same 50hp 1600 engine power. I'll wait for now, but as I own a couple of bugs I do fancy it one day. My way of recycling I guess.

Same here, I really fancy doing the conversion, but the prices being quoted by the specialists are nuts. You can buy a brand new Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf for less than they want. I appreciate there are economies of scale involved, but I just to buy the motor, batteries and controller hardware, there's no cost to develop a whole vehicle architecture and monocoque etc..

A DIY kit for a beetle works out around 10k. Half the cost is in the batteries. Some of the 3 phase ac motors are pretty efficient and have good torque.
