Firstly, my knowledge of air cooled is basic.
I’ve done 350 miles in one day, and had no problems, but I felt the van slightly misfire.
I bought a Gunson vacuum carb tuner, and it did show one out against the other, so I adjusted to make them both even, and replaced the linkage, checked them again, and all seems ok.
However, after a 40 mile trip at about 65 mph today, I opened the engine bay, and it seemed very hot inside, you couldn’t touch the aluminium pulley.
I’ve no idea if this is acceptable, I mean it’s fitted with an extended oil sump and remote oil filler and in the spec, it says “ welded doghouse fan, and rear engine kit with heat duct, which means nothing to me?
The stainless exhaust is directly under the engine, exits to the right, which I suspect must add to the heat retained in the engin bay. So I thought if I can get a VW specialist to check the timing and the mixture is ser right, I’d feel a lot better.
Just clocked up 8200 miles since being fitted, close on 2000 miles under my ownership.

I would check the plugs first and see what they say about the overall mixture.
A good investment is a quality afr gauge/02 sensor.
I found it very useful for setting up jets and generally keeping an eye on things.
