Helping out a friend to get his GTi ready to get back on the road, He is building a semi track car. His plans are- ABF 2.0l conversion with throttle bodies and possiblity of nitrous, minimal interior to save weight.
Im doing the welding and bodywork for him, im sure he wouldnt mind me using vzi as a worklog. Hello if you're reading! I'll try to update periodically to bring us upto date.
He brought me the car toward the begining of April looking like this-
The sunroof was worse than first thought, the drain holes had nearly completely dissintegrated, and rot had extended into the roof.
Once i this repair piece was welded in, I drilled it to fit some half inch stainless tubing to act as the new drain plug, same thing on the other side.
Decided to do some filler work to get the roof somewhere near whilst waiting for the new sliding sunroof to arrive.
Once the sunroof was fitted i discovered that it wouldn't slide back as the previous owner had to make clearence to fit the rollcage by twatting the sunroof cage with a hammer.
Did some more filler work, a few spot repairs on the roof and back end, and blocked down the rest of the original paint which was in great condition.
Replacment doors also in great nick, but needed leveling...
Then I shot some epoxy primer over any bare metal, and then reduced it to cover the rest of the repairs and original paint, as it makes a great sealer.
Wanted to keep the factory seams on the rear, i have seen a few mk1 restos where this seam is filled, which i didnt really want to do, they were carefully masked and seam sealed.
This dry guide coat is amazing stuff, this along with my 16'' sanding block are 2 of my best purchases. Highly recommended, its quite expensive, but you'll save money on aerosols, you dont have to wait for it to dry and it doesnt clog up the paper.
I blocked down the bonnet to find the highs and lows, and ground out a few stone chips and filled
Tried to get the front end set up with nice gaps, the n/s side wing was a pattern part, which suprisingly nice fit after some fettling, but the bolt holes were a million miles out, and the built in washers where disgustingly out of line. So i removed them and plug welded the original ones into better position.
The plan is to prep and paint interior, engine bay and all the jams, build the car up for final blocking on the outside, mask of the door gaps with 3m soft edge masking tape. Instead of painting panels off the car.
top quality work , looks better than factory , looked at the bonnett just minded me of my 912 and 181 bonnetts , the amount of work i had to do like your self was unreal , could have preped a car in the time it took lol , top work owen nw
BUT... There wa an unfortunate accident when i tripped over the extension reel and it slammed into my bug Ive been thinking about 2-toning it for a while, and the mishap has just made up my mind... I think. Black ontop upto the swage line,
