I just bought an 03 Golf with an SDI engine and the timing belt is of unknown age and looks dubious! I've done timing belts before, on diesel VAG motors too and never used timing tools. But everything on the net says use them for the SDI engine.

First of all, all the simple mistakes have been covered.
1. Fitted new belt
2. Heavy wear, rubber shavings in the engine
3. 'Hrrm, tensions wrong' .. 'No its .. not?'
4. Order new top pulley, old ones worn anyhows.
5. Feel like VW genius

The fan belt is quite loose on my beetle and i cant see any way of tensioning it, is there any adjustment anywhere or do i just need a new belt. The belt itself looks fine to me and isnt perished, it doesent look like it needs repacing.
