I've recently bought myself an old beetle engine to strip down and re-build as a 1641, mainly as a learning exercise for myself, and possibly to fit it into my beetle when I'm done.
Before i took it apart i measured the end float with a DTI gauge and got a result of about 1mm, which is...
Ok, this is something I should had done before cranking that gland nut!!
1776 Type 1 engine..
Note.. I have no front pulley fitted and the gland nut is super tight, can I go by with these measurements?
Ignore the black markings!
Cheers all, if you need more...
I have placed a 0.3 & 0.34 end float shim and torqued the Gland nut to about 60ft/lbs (Stuggling to hold the flywheel to get any more tonight)
BUT I still have 0.65mm of end float.
Every where seems to suggest using 3 shims, but am I OK to use 4 or 5 to get the end float down to 0.1mm.
I'm in the process of freshening my engine up, putting some new pushrod tubes on etc. Before I took one head off, there was no endfloat, well minimal anyway. I took my front pulley off to get the tinware off and after I have put it back on, I have noticed lots of endfloat although it's on fully...
I've got to the stage of my engine build where I'm measuring up and setting the end float, i.e. long block basically complete.
The problem I'm having is that there doesn't appear to be any noticeable end float, even when no shims are fitted.
With the flywheel off, I get some...
How much should I expect to pay for a 1641 beetle engine with end float?
i am told it can be rebuilt but I am not sure how much it would cost to get it fixed on top of buying the engine?
Please don't shout at me, I have no idea about this stuff. :D
hi, i'm just partially rebuilding my 1641 engine and i came to the bottom pulley and i can push it in and out about 2/3mm and its the same on the fly wheel (when i push the bottom pulley in, the flywheel gets pushed out...)?
surely this is bad? is this end float?
thanks, jimmy :hangloose
OK - true offer £5 to the first to diag what I have done wrong? Plus muchos kudos and a beer/coffee at a show
