I know this isnt very VW, but hey, lets be liberal.

Im buying a 125cc bike, i currently have a full car licence and no CBT or anything.

Do i need to do a CBT to be able to ride the bike on L plates.

Do i also need to apply to the DVLA to get a provisional bike licence??

Im a bit confused, cant really find much on the net explaining it clearly.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers!

What do you need to drive a 125 motor bike?

motorcycle licence law: CBT
This answer applies to the UK only

To ride a 125cc motocycle in the UK you must be at least 17 years old. You must then pass a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course on a 125cc motorcycle. This is a full day course where you will be taught how to control the bike, this is done off road. You then watch a saftey video, and will recieve classroom instruction about saftey (including required clothing e.g.helmet) and about riding on the road. Then if the instructor thinks that you are ready you will do a 2 hour observed ride on the road. For this you will be followed at all times by the instructor, who will be in radio contact with you. After this ride you will recieve feedback on the ride, and if you showed correct and safe use of the bike, a showed an understanding of the highway code you will be given a CBT certificate, which will allow you to ride a 125cc bike, but you must dispaly L plates atall times, and you must not carry a pillion passenger, or ride on the motorway. CBTs only last for 2 years, after which they must be taken again. Once you have obtained your CBT you can have riding lessons and take the full bike test.
You must hold a provisional driving licence to take a CBT.

Yep you need a CBT to ride on L's for 2 years. Only takes a day to pass and it is really easy-especially as you've done it before.

Are you sorted for a bike? I've a TZR 125 up for grabs if your interested. Needs small amount of wiring and TLC to get MOT.

All the bestin getting your CBT

Your full car license may have a provisional bike license included on it, check the entitlement codes on the back of it.

You will definitely need a CBT (taken on a geared bike as if you pass on a twist & go it doesn't cover geared bikes I don't think) to ride the bike on the road along with your provisional bike entitlement. You can sometimes use your own bike to do the CBT but you'll need someone to get it to the place you're doing it for you as, until you have your CBT your insurance wont be valid. Probably easier to do it on the test centres bike. To be honest, as long as you've got basic road sense, some (but not too much) confidence & a decent level of co-ordination the CBT should be no problem.

IIRC you'll need to pass your full test within 2 years of your CBT (that's the theory, the off road part that comes into play early this year & the road test) or you have to renew your CBT.

Not sure where in the country you are but if you're in Essex I highly recommend The Link in Chelmsford. Great group of guys who got me through my CBT & my DAS first time. Not sure if they still do it but this time last year they were offering 'winter discounts' on the DAS course so it was ÂŁ100 cheaper than usual.

Good luck!

Much the same as everyone else has said, although I think it doesn't matter what you do your CBT on (gears or twisty) as you can ride anything under 125cc, providing you are over 17.

Looking for a 125? Do a web search for a Hyosung GT125 (not the "R"). I've got a '53 plate here going for ÂŁ600.

Enough hi-jacking methinks, I'm outta here
