HI, have recently had trouble starting my 69 1200 bug, thought it was the starter motor but having replace that yesterday with no change to the way it tries to start, im guess that was to no avail. When trying to start it, it will slow down and turn over quite irregularly and violently. Im guessing this must be either firing in the wrong order or time, could this be the dizzy on the way out? the wierd thing is it will eventually start and run fine and will also turn over fine one the crank by hand. any ideas anyone?

Did you replace the starter pinion shaft bush (in bellhousing)
when you put the new starter in? A worn bush can make the
starter teeth seize and crank slowly. Corroded battery cables
(or earth cable on gbox) can also cause similar symptoms.
