Hows it going?!!
Bit of a problem! Iv just bought a rolling resto, drove her home but the clutch was slipping,i did know about this when i bought it though!
Thing is,the guy i bought it off said its a 1200 engine with a 1500 gearbox! Is this ok?could this be a problem?I actually thought vw only did a 1.3 and 1.6!prob wrong!
When i put the clutch down there is a big bit at the top when i rest my foot on it with nothing there!Maybe 6inches! when i lift it back up it engages the gear quite near the top.seems to be ok for 15miles or so but then if i floor it a bit it starts to slip in 3rd and 4th.Goes great though, and happily sitts in gear if im taking it easy and feather it!
Just wanted to see what you think before i put her in a garage!Local Clutch "Specialists" quoted me 500 to fix the clutch!!Cars not even worth that!!! village garage did say 250 though!
Cheers

Thieving gits! Thw VW time to remove and fit the engine is 1.9 hours.
The clutch kit is a max of £75.

There is a wing nut at the gearbox end of the clutch cable. This should be possible to tighten and maybe take some os the free play out.

I say maybe because the cable may be frayed or stretched and will need replacing.

I suggest you find an honest VW specialist in your area, or get yourself a Haynes, a decent sized trolley jack and a pair of axle stands.

Just as long as you don't do one job for yourself successfully and set yourself up as a 'specialist'

There's a lot of them about!:incheek:

Yeah couldnt believe it! I even said to the guy that it was only 4bolts to remove the engine and he said it was "a tricky job and would prob take 6hours!" It was at one of those Nationwide Auto Centres!
Thought the quote of 250 at the village garage was ok though!
Could it be slipping because of the cable?i know its hard to say but with the slack when the clutch is up does that suggest its the cable?!
Dont suppose you know of an aircooled person in Somerset do you? I used to live in Cornwall and everyone with a bug whent to this guy that operated in the middle of nowhere out of a tiny shed!He was awesome though!one of those old spiritual guys who knew everything about bugs and buses!
Cheers
