Hello could anybody help. just wanting to no if its possible to recondion a 6v system on a beetle and make a bit more power come out of it ,without having to do a total 12v conversion anybody got any links thankyou.
The biggest cause of low power on old 6V systems is just poor corroded connections/terminals and burnt internal contacts on switches etc. Rectify all of those and fit some uprated headlight bulbs, or additional driving lights, and you should get along OK.
The headlight switch, dipswitch, and ign. switch are nearly always badly burnt internally, and the fusebox can be a cause as well. If you have the patience dismantle and clean the fusebox (the contacts all pull apart) and then rebuild and solder all the contacts together, that can make a considerable difference. Earth wires (brown) are as important as all the others, make sure they make good contact with the body.
On my 6v Beetles I wired the headlights into their own circuit with a feed direct from the battery - and with QuartzH bulbs they were plenty bright enough to drive through the night. As Moby says - the issue is that 6v draws twice the current than 12v and so gives everything a harder time.
