hi everybody , im 17 and recently purchased a 72 beetle as my first car as ive ive always loved vw's

i was wondering if anybody could give me a heads up of things that i may need ,

What do i need to lower the car and put camber on the rear, ( i have heard that camber comes automatically when lowering? )

is there anyway to give it a bit more power ?

are there any recommended websites for roof racks >

May I be the first to say welcome!!!!!

Lowering the rear can be done with simple tools and no additional parts... to a point. Slamming on the floor is a very different matter.

Lowering the front can be done with an adjustable beam or dropped spindles. The latter will keep your suspension feeling good.

Is it a 1200cc beetle? If so you could change the exhaust and give it a good service, carb clean etc. That should help to start.
thank you !
what does the simple rear lowering involve ?
slamming on the floor would be the end product but whilst im strapped for cash im just looking for a cheap way to fill the arches !
Its a 1300 its just had a top end rebuild and i just recieved a carb kit through the post today so that will be getting serviced in the short future
It will involve carefully removing the rear spring plates without removing any of your fingers in the process and without removing the torsion bars, then moving them 1 spline around so the arm is effectively further up and bolting back together. Not quite as simple as it sounds.

Do PLENTY of reading online and use the search facility on here. Loads of people have done this before and you cant be too prepared.

Good luck!
okay thanks for the help ill go do my research !

Hello and Welcome!;)

I think you blew it in the first sentence:( When you said you were 17 and wanted to modify it, you immediately put yourself into the uninsurable bracket. Before you even attempt anything check out what you're going to do with insurers. I found out to my cost(or not as the case may be;):D) that modifying the '03 for my daughter meant that she wouldn't drive it younger than 25! I even checked with both my broker and a mate, who ran/owned the country's largest competition car insurer, all along with every mod but in October 2010 everything changed and she was uninsurable in it.

You will have to declare any modification so there is no getting out of it. However, if you have mates that run modified cars ask them how they insure them?
Hi mate, i am 18 have a 1300 and am currently paying about £1500 for my insurance, and i have it lowered with aftermarket exhaust, this is third party all in my name with adrian flux, they are stingy gits so ring a company called need2insure to get a quote to get them to match it is what i did, my mate has 1200 and he is paying a little more than me. engine wise i spoke to my insurance and they quoted me an extra £100ish if i put a 1600 engine in, which ill probably be doing in june when i can get a year no claims behind me.

So thats probably a good starting point for you being in the same boat, feel free to message me about anything as im sure you'll find it handy to talk to someone in the same situation
