HI
Can anyone give me some advice. I'm currently in the middle of a full body off restoration and I'm struggling to refit my rear axle tubes back onto to the spring plates. Spring plates are set as manual suggests at 17 degrees .Can anyone help as I don't really want to take a hammer to my newly painted bits

Make sure the spring plates are up on the stops and that the covers are bolted on. If so you should just be able to yank (by hand) the axle tubes towards the back of the car and into the spring plate slots. If you still have problems loosen the gearbox mounts.

It sometimes helps to support the car on an axle stand under the end of the trailing arm, the weight of the car brings the spring plate closer in line to the axle tube, especially if you can get a couple of mates to sit in the back of the car too.
