I had one before a hard wood one Second hand out the paper in oh 1996 £200 wickes £1100 one.. Worked a treat..

but I am thinking about doing it again.. buying a secondhand one and refitting it but this time they are UPVC plastic

alot of the adds say about take it apart your self?

do they get brittle and break when you take them apart??

are the windows just that windows screwed togeather? ( Frame wise )

the roof can they be converted to Glass roof's ?

If I was to loose a side ( box conservatory ) like this one, and build a wall instead? say the left side where my neighbour is..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280673519508&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

any views would good.. I was tempted to put in a bid on this one but held off till I get some feed back from peoples in the trade :D

you can lose the one side and build a full height wall, but you would need a new cill to fix the ring beam too, the roof cappings can sometimes break when removing, if the units are on double sided tape they will need knifing to remove the glass, the poly carb can be changed to glass depending on the size of the poly fitted idealy 24mm or 28mm. but if the poly is bigger then 28mm then you would need new roof cappings or just leave the poly in.
hope this helps :D

We fitted our own uPVC conservatory at the last house. Technically it wasn't really too difficult to do. We stayed in that house for a further 6 years and in all that time we had no issues with it. I used to stand on the roof of it to clean the upstairs windows every 3 - 4 months and I'm no lightweight either.

I don't remember it ageing in any way during all of that time, including the ruber seals for the roof panels, so I would say that in my experience it should be OK.

Cheers

I am looking to do this cheap cheap.. so if I can buy a decent one for good money and I am happy to spend more for the right one then I can add the glass roof later I guess..

From memory do people use them all year round...?

My parents do but they have glass roof and also underfloor heating.. this seams to work..

Now I sell conservatory roof blinds.. if you want some you know where to come now.. just get that in :lol:

and I have always thought the poly carb roofs to be shite. Hence I sell people black out roof blinds which really does help keep the heat out or level it off and more important keep the heat in in winter..

We want to use this as a dining room and then we will knock though the kitchen and diner in to one family room / kitchen soon to be 4 of us in here.. so we thought best to make it a more family house..

So can you use the conservatory all year round as a dining room.. it was years ago I had this hardwood, wooden box and it was 2.5 x 2.5 meters and full glass way too hot in summer way too hot in winter totaly useless and as it was on the sea front constantly sealing up leaks!! horrid thing but looked nice.. esp when we sold it.. quick leave :lol:

so I guess are modern poly roofs as good as glass now? or are glass still the best?? I have even thought of just putting in board on the inside with insulation so it's dark in there like a roof and from the out side it still looks clear plastic eg temp??

modern poly roofs now are 35mm thick and available in clear, opal, bronze anti sun blah blah lol,. but like i say if you buy one that has 28mm poly then you can change it to glass later on. best to buy one that you can take down at least you know all the parts are there. :D

Agreed.. I have seen some that have been taken down and how do you know what's what.. I would rather find one.. work with the owner and lable it as I go.
Right 28mm it is then.. what about weight eg a glass roof on one.. would it have a ring of Ali around the top of the windows part.. eg is there a design to stay away from that you can't add glass due to weight?

there isnt any difference with newish ones to fit glass or poly, but i have taken down some right crap over the years, just make sure the roof spas are alloy clocked with plastic and the roof ridge is alloy that is cladded with plastic and that there is a alloy ringbeam that sits on top of the frames this to will have a plastic clocking cover to. and make sure the units are toughened and not broke down and misty so view on a sunny day lol

Top advice cheers..

Ok so if I look for ones that are say 5-6 years old and or decent make.. there is one with a glass roof from Anglia at £1000 I think but I recon it could be had for less.

and check the Ali part that makes sence..

so cheap ones will be mainly plastic crap ..

there are some good cheap ones to be had, but there is also lots of crap (good old ebay and scaming people) just remember toughened glass is as stong as anything face on, but you touch one of the corners or edge or the units they bust , so make sure you put them on cardboard or sheets not on slabs or concrete. have fun being bullshited by people who think its worth loads when really its not, enjoy :D

don't worry I am a sales man I know how to turn it round

I think I am right in thinking £1000 should buy me a nice decent 3.2 x 3.5 conservatory poss in brown to match the house..

with a glass roof..

or £450-500 for a white poly carb roof one..

i own a conny company you cannot change poly to glass dont try they are not strong enough to take weight buy second hand thats fine they are simple to take down and erect shame really i took a woodgrain one down and skipped it three week ago there is some rubbish out there i am also taking a woodgrain edwardian roof but with bronze poly down in 3-4 weeks time pm me if your interested its yours if the customer does not want it and you can collect from nottinghamshire

ok I think I need to keep in touch.. you guys might come across some thing.. I will draw out and measure out what we are looking out for..

I think it should be fairly easy as we are looking for a box really

I will confirm but 3.2m wide x 3.2-3.6m deep..dwarf wall. with french doors on one side.. I am guessing I can change sides if it's the wrong way round at the time.. standard 3 sided roof or way cool a 2 sided ( gable ended )

I can hire a lorry and come up and get..I can drive a 7.5tonne one. Basicly your big TNT lorry so should make collection easy..

Ideal would be brown. Poly roof ok would be interested in upgrading the roof or glass..I do keep hearing that name for the roof system your talking about..

cheers Guys.. I have some where to store it in bits at my place while I do the wall..:D
