My husband and I never argue but today weve had a bit of a barney over what engine to put in the beetle as its collapsing.I want a 1600 and he wants a 1641, I drive it most of the time with the sprogs in it,so dont I get to win :D .Is there really that much difference  . I suggested we get discs fitted if its got a bit of poke and that didnt go down well either  Somebody back me up or put me in my place.
Today the brakes failed, the hand brake came off in my hand and I watched the hub cap bounce in to a soggy, muddy shitty field and had to retrieve it in my bestest boots :(

I you drive regular i`d have a completely stock 1600...stock air cleaner the lot...discs would be mighty fine though!
Personally id go 1600 and spend the money on a desent exhaust and set of carbs ..... with a well set up pair of 36DRLA's and a good exhaust my stock 1600 is quicker than stock and does much more to the gallon

1641's have thinner cylinder walls which can warp although lots of people build them

1600 and disks, no great difference beetween 1600 and 1641, had both in my old bay ;)
I personally wouldn't bother with 1641cc. Increased cost and decreased reliability for 57cc extra hardly seems worth it.

Now if your husband was talking about 1776cc on the other hand, then he'd have a point! ;)
Are the 1776 really that much better?

What G/Box is that matched with?
1600 FTW :D
both good engines, but id favour the 1641. :)

They are very good but more expensive too.
I would fit disc brakes first. No matter what.
A 1600cc would be fine for a daily.
If you want to go larger than 1600cc, 1776cc would be my next step. Personally. :D
Forget disks.....................................get a parachute!;)
Good standard 1600 and make certain the present brake setup is working well - that'll do
Hi everyone its the other half. The beetle is stock at the mo, and we ar pretty much keeping it that way. I just fancy a bit of extra speed and accelaration don't want to go mad and reliabilty is important hav heard good things about the the 1641 and would love to go that way with discs on the front and single carb setup! Surely its not too much to asK! christ i am only just 30! just wanna have a bit of fun! our camper is stock and definetly not gonna mess! just fancy somthing a bit different with the bug. thanks for the counselling, me and the wife are just about talking again! lOVE YOU BABE!! (SUPPOSE I SHOULD THINK MYSELF LUCKY she loves the vw scene could be the other way!
My bay has a standard 1600 with a 32/36 Webber for that extra bit of oomph, should be a reasonable setup in a Beetle I should think.;)
The wife here, hes just tried to make it up to me and offered me a rolo, the only problem is Ive just ended up eating them all by accident  now I am in big trouble!
They just fell in my mouth :D

I dont think you`d notice that much of a difference to be honest, i`ve had both over the years and if i didnt know which was which, i couldnt have told the difference. A well setup 1600 is every bit as good as 1641 and probably a good bit more reliable. Just my opinion.
