After being without a VW, or any form of motorised toy, of any sort for over twelve months, and a van for over two years, I've just picked up a nice, solid T4, 800 Special. 馃檪

Many years ago over ten, when I started looking for my first T4, this was the very first one I looked at. I only realised when I pulled up at the house, whigh has a distinctive car port. At the time the owner was using it as a work van and with the old chestnut; Don't buy the first one you see, ringing in my ears, I passed it up.

The same owner has since retired and spent the intervening years turning it into a leisure van, tidying up the engine and bodywork, getting it through the last six or seven MOT's without even so much as an advisory and using it sparingly.

I'm looking forward to having a van I can just use, instead of fix.馃檪馃憤

Thanks folks.馃槉

Hopefully, it'll be taxed and insured by the end of play today.

.....and would you believe it, my O/H is taking our daughter to a netball tournament, in Skegness, today and she'll be there all weekend. Plus, the other kids are working and old enough to fend for themselves. Which just leaves me, the dog and a van. Decisions, decisions. 馃榿

Well, going away in the van didn't happen. It appears insuring it isn't as easy as it was. My usual second policy insurer no longer insures vehicles registered at a M postcode.馃檮

Instead I went to Bristol and back, for a double front passenger seat for it. I caught up with my B-I-L, who picked it up for me. We went and got some brunch in some hip Bristol bar/cafe/gaff. It was very nice, but boy do they like to check you're not allergic to anything. I think I was asked four times if I had an allergies, in the end I said I didn't know and it was going to be fun finding out.馃榿

I'll give Classic and A plan a call. Although I've a feeling I've tried A plan for a previous vehicle and they were uncompetitive.

Insurance update.

Several of the specialist insurers won't insure the van with me having a Manchester (and other large cities) postcode.

In pure frustration and to kill a bit of time, I went on the Direct Line Van website. Would you believe, they're a couple of hundred quid cheaper than anyone else! They've mirrored my car NCD馃槉. I don't have the classic policy perks, retention, etc, but I don't have the restrictions either. All done and dusted, and I'll be giving it spin shortly.

Steve, think how many packets of biscuits I can get in it.馃榿

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried them all.

Any idea what makes them 'Special '? I used to have an 888 Special, which had all the bells and whistles, the 800 seems basic.
I think it was just badge engineering. Mine was billy-basic but it was what I needed - a good sound solid SWB van that towed my racecar trailer. I did EBI in it with a ton of spares and tools, two lads, loads of beer, fridge, generator, Gay-bo..... it did MPG like my Golf TDI! Lovely
