Im starting to build an engine and am struggling a bit with what size bearings i will need.

firstly my big end bearing:
The journals on the cranks all measure around 55.02 . IS THIS STANDARD OR HAS IT HAD A GRIND?

Secondly the main bearings:
The journals are all about 54.75, IS THIS STD OR HAS IT BEEN GROUND?

Any pointers or information on the bearings i need will be greatly appreciated :)

P.s. i know the outer diameters

big end diameter = 54.98-55.00mm
Main bearing Journal diameter 1,2 and 3 = 54..97 - 54.99mm
Main bearing Journal diameter 4 = 39.98mm

regrinds are available in 0.25mm/0.5mm/0.75mm under size

by the looks of your mains i would say its had a regrind to 0.25 undersize or it must be worn as hell!

take the case to a machine shop
he will tell you if the case is good
if it needs a grind
and will be able to get you the correct bearings just as cheap as a vw shop
