So here we are, starting our maiden voyage into restoring our BRUMMIE! He is called Brummie as we bought him from Birmingham! He is 1972 1192cc. Here is a pic of him being trailored home.

Getting him in the garage was a laugh as he has a broken front near side ball joint and the brakes don't work :(

First we started off removing the interior:

And removed all the wings and runners. Now to start looking at the sorry looking engine.

The car came with no keys so first job was to take off the steering wheel and replace the ignition.

With that replaced, and a new battery,

it was time to see if the engine worked. We turned it over but no firing. We removed some tinware and I angle grinded part of the rear valance off to create some space.

We changed the coil, replaced some wiring, changed the spark plugs, checked the electronic distributor, cleaned the carb and fuel pump - but still no spark! Time to call the cavalry in!

After hours of trying every known possibility, it turned out that all that was wrong was a live wire wasn't working behind the ignition switch. Sorted and then we had life! :D

We've fixed the windscreen wipers, washer jets, horn and dash lights. So very productive day!

Started work on the front beam this week, so started by taking out the petrol tank.

Took us an absolute age to get the beam bolts off! But we finally got them off!

Now we're gonna spend this weekend cleaning, stripping back the paint, rust proofing and painting. We're going to fully replace the tie rods, ends, steering damper, bushes and bolts.

Then do the same to the framehead and refit the front beam.

So hopefully an update by the end of the weekend of a newly freshened up front end!

Got to work this week cleaning and painting the front beam.

But while under the front of the car removing the beam we noticed a rust hole in the floor pan behind the foot pedals, covered by fibreglass. So after further inspection we found a few more!

So we've decided to remove the body and replace the floorpans, fortunately we dint have any major problems from any of the bolts!

So now we're at this stage:

Bodies in the garden!

and we're working on the chassis!

A bit of an update from todays work:

Got the front head sanded down

And then rust primed:

And first coat of black paint on the front beam:

Next job is to get new floorpans, and a MIG welder - unless anyone local fancies earning a few quid?!

A bit of guidance needed on the floor pan too - cheap, quality or heavy duty?

He's going to nice and lowered, porsche interior, standard steels painted illuminous yellow like the car, with chrome hubs and lots of chrome! Keeping the 1200cc engine as its my girlfriends first car and need to keep the insurance low! Next steps are floorpans, front disk brakes, new steering and brake pipes.

Spent this weekend removing one of the floorpans, and cleaning up the rear axle and gearbox.

Starting a welding course this week, so that I can do the welding myself as this works out a damn sight cheaper than taking it to the garage!!

Bought some disk spindles and a ball joint remover, so next task will be to sort out the front suspension/steering and clean up and paint the rear suspension.

Went through a few highs and lows this week! I've struggled and struggled to get the ball joints out, so now theyre going to The Bay Bay for them to remove!

Got the gearbox off but don't own a 36mm socket and cant remove the rear drums to unattach the handbrake cable so had to work around it for now!

Got one side of the rear beam stripped back and rust proofed, gonna work on the other side next (obviously!) and then properly remove the gearbox, carry on cleaning:

and then paint yellow! Any advice on paint to use? Was going to use OMP high temp yellow spray paint?

Then its time to actually put Brummie back together! :D

Ball joints now replaced by the bay bay! Thanks fellas!

Spent the last week removing drivers side floorpan, couldnt get the rear hub caps off, so cut the handbrake cable, removed the gearbox and rear arms.

Then sanded the whole chassis back to bear metal, 2 coats of rust proof:

Then 3 coats of black:

Now going to order front and rear bug pack lowered shocks, fit the torsion arms, spindles, shocks at the front, and save up for the disk brake conversion. At the rear re-fit the freshened up splines, new shocks, re-fit the soon to be painted gearbox and arms, renew CV boots, and also save up for new rear drums. Gonna buy new floorpans, and hire a spot welder for the weekend and get them fitted, so busy busy busy! :D

Its been a while since we posted but the work hasn't stopped! 12 weeks into the welding course and I was ready to have a go at putting the floorpans in!

So they have been welded in, seam sealed and primed.

Next job is 2 or 3 coats of underseal, flip back over, seal and paint the top, bugpack lowered shocks front and rear ordered, and front disk brake kit, so want him standing on his own feet by christmas! :D
