Hi All

My 1975 1200 beetle had been sat for 5 years before i purchased it. The carb was cleaned out for the MOT but it losses power at higher revs , The car has had a new petrol pump and various fuel lines .

The carb on the car is a 30 PICT but i have been offered a brand new 34 PICT carb from a mate but will it fit my beetle?

Thanks

If your existing carb is the original one but worn then it's better to get it rebuilt (providing that it's an original German one) than to botch the wrong carb onto the engine.

You'd need an adaptor to fit a 34 pict onto a 1200 manifold, and the jetting will be wrong. If you have a 30 PICT1 or PICT2 carb at the moment then you will require a different distributor also, to work correctly with a 34 PICT.

Hi

thanks for the replies , is there a way to check if its the original carb ? I have seen the rebuild kits are they quite easy to to take apart and rebuild ?

Not sure its the carb just going on what the seller said but i'm open to any other things that i can check ? all options and suggestions welcome

cheers

Make sure all the following are set correctly -

Valve clearances
Points gap
Plug gaps
Ignition timing (in that order)

Then, and only then, start messing with the carb.

To get an idea if it's original, let us know more. Year of engine (a photo would be good) - and exact markings on the carb.

Made in Germany on the carb is a good sign. Made anywhere else is not.

You can strip, clean and rebuild the carb with a rebuild kit but if the throttle spindle is worn and sloppy then your best bet is to get it professionally done. Gower and Lee do a good job I hear.
