I would like to put a diesel engine in my 81 Westfalia Vanagon.
What will fit in besides a Vanagon engine? I am looking for the cheapest option. Eventually I want to run it on used vegetable oil.

sounds like you need to have a chat on here......

there are a number of well trodden paths....VW golf, ford escort and pugeot/citroen engines are all candidates. Have a chat to JP and alexfts on the forum they both run diesel lumps (albeit in their bays)

Thanks.
I only took a glace at those sites, but they look very helpful.
The problem (as usual) is money. I don't know if I should put money into my current engine, or into a new engine, and either way it looks like I should put money into a whole different vehicle so that I have something to use while fixing this one up.
As I mentioned, my long term plan is a grease diesel. I have a friend running a Golf on used fryer oil from Chinese restaurants. He drove over ten thousand miles and only used about 5 gallons of biodiesel. The rest of the time he was burning used fryer oil, and at 45 miles to the gallon. It is inspiring.

id ignore ford escort diesels they aren,t good and very heavy on timing belts.peugeot 1.9 turbo engines are legendary for out living the cars they are in 200,000 miles is every day mileage .and they run very well on vegatable oils.try and get hold of one without the security coded pump(early bosch).my old 405 had 185,000 on it started on the button and still did 40>45 to the gallon.with serice costs of 1 fuel filter(lucas cav/plant)£1.50,oil filter £2.50.oil £3.00.
