Confirm this.
However all beetle do have a form of irs as both wheels move independently.
but a GT is basically a 1300s with a GT box, a 1300s has a mac phearson strut and irs. as far as i am aware.
Nice article on GT Beetles here:

I just wanted to clarify as tomorrow I was planning on raising the car a little as believe it or not it's on it's arse I like it low but I can't get it down the drive into garage without scraping the pan and scraping leads to rust !

1300S and GT are the same basicly a disc equipt 1600cc engined "1300" Type 1 70's bug, swing axel

1302 and 1303 are mcphearson and IRS.

Semi auto beetles and some US models also had IRS rear ends.

Your GT is swing axel
looks like i'm a swinger then

thanks, wasn't sure on the date.
This is a common misconception made popular by Haynes 1302/03 and GT manual. They forgot to state in there that the GT was swing axle and so everyone assumes that it is IRS like the super beetles
As stated, it should be swing axle. But as some cars get converted to IRS (really they mean semi-trailing arm suspension) you can check easily. Look at the driveshafts that come out of the gearbox - if each driveshaft has just 1 rubber boot then it's swing axle, if there's a rubber boot on both ends of the driveshaft then it's IRS
