More 'gas-guzzler' drivers to pay extra for parking permits
Katharine Barney, Evening Standard

A SCHEME to penalise "gas-guzzlers" with higher parking charges is to be rolled at across a borough.

Richmond was the first council to introduce a trial of the scheme two years ago.

Since then eight boroughs - Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest - have introduced similar schemes.

Now Richmond plans to be the first to roll out the scheme across the entire borough wherever it sets parking charges . Areas such as Royal Parks will be exempt.

The proposals would see drivers of the most polluting vehicles pay an extra 25 per cent. The majority of motorists would not be affected but some would qualify for a 25 per cent discount.

Currently the council charges residents £300 for an annual permit for cars with the biggest engines, and £450 for a second such vehicle, but charges will be reassessed in April.

Councillor David Trigg, cabinet member for traffic transport and parking on Richmond council, said: "I see the extension of CO2-related parking policy as completing something we started two years ago.

"Because of technological advances it has now become possible to apply the same principles to everyone who parks in our borough- residents and visitors alike.

"This was not possible in 2007; now that it is, I believe the system will be both fairer and more efficient.

"As part of our commitment to the environment the long term aim of this policy is to encourage people to use less-polluting cars.

"No one action will achieve this but I certainly believe local government has an important part to play and we know now that policies like this one do make most people think seriously about what they do."

I don't live there, but what's the betting it'll become popular everywhere...

"Charges will rise by 25% for vehicles producing more than 180g of CO2 per km"

My work pick up is an Isuzu 4 wheel drive with a Euro 4 compliant 2.5 litre diesel and is in one of the lower tax bands:confused:

Hang on a minute, weren't we supposed to be saving Jaguar and Land Rover last week??

So, serious point, do you think they'll ever be some kind of backlash? I.E. a serious shift in politics due to policies leading to a large fall/rise in votes, people just saying effectively that you've gone too far and not voting for a major party, or is the person that sees cars as a reasonable necessity, and not the devil incarnate a minority?

Does that make sense?

How can they apply the charges to visitors? How will they know what car a visitor is driving? ANPR? Stealing plates off the write-offs at work it is then...

When you park in a pay-and-display car park, you have to type in your number plate. The machine will talk to the DVLA computer, which will tell it what emissions band your car is in and the machine will charge you accordingly. Put a plate in that doesn't match that on the car and you'll get a hefty fine too. I imagine that's how it works :)

I live in one of the listed boroughs where they intorduced the same scheme - last year I paid £60 residents parking, this year was £130 because of the engine size - it's bloody PARKED!! It's not polluting at ALL, that's ZERO emissions!!

Road tax is already related to engine size/emissions so how the fuck can they get away with linking parking to it too? Thieving fuckers

WTF will they think of next?
Banning old cars from city centres I imagine. You have to go and get a brand new car built so that you reduce your carbon footprint

If only the politicians cared half as much about the environment as they do about being seen to care about the environment (and taxation ;)) then things might operate with some common sense.
