all vw motors after 1965(introduction of the 1500 motor) are unleaded.

anyone who tells you otherwise is more than likely trying to sell you some rocks to put in your fuel tank, but calling them a 'catalyst' or somesuch other bollocks, or some fuel additive :incheek: mexican bug motors have been deliberately modifed at the factory to run on crappy, low octane mex fuel full of contaminants.

is it the original engine ?, has it been repaired over its life ? have the heads been replaced at all ? you may be able to find out the age of the engine case from the engine number , its impossible to tell from here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its the original engine. and i dont think the heads have been changed.
you should be using 4 star or a lead additive. But there are many who run their earlier engines on unleaded anyway because, after a lifetime of lead, there's a bit of resiliance built up and you're more likely to have a problem with something else than not running 4star.

I am not an expert though, and you're best off doing a search in tech. It's been covered thoroughly over there in the past.
