Hi guys.
Washed and polished my 74 at the weekend to leave it gleeming, then noticed on the next journey that on decelleration a very slight popping sound coming from the rear (its not as loud as a backfire).

I've searched and read on here (and subsequently assume) that its likely to be a hole in the exhaust or gap between the exchanger and muffler. Is this right?

At the same time, my engine seems everso slightly not as smooth at idle. I had a quick look and the fanbelt appears to be (only slightly) looser than normal.

Are the two connected at all (i.e. loose fanbelt & popping sound?)

Is is easy to tighten the fanbelt for a complete novice like myself.

Many thanks for any advice..

I doubt whether the popping sound and the fan-belt tension are linked, but the popping sound and "rough" idle may well be.

For the popping sound/rough idle, check first for air leaks on the inlet side, or exhaust leaks on the exhaust side.

The fan-belt is a perfect place to start venturing into minor maintenance! All you need are a spanner and a screwdriver (and a manual). Good luck!
